Hi
hoping someone knows this.
Both the red warning lights ( charge etc ) in middle of gts dash won't come on.
Took out bulbs and there is power to one side of each socket. Suspect earth problem but I don't know where to trace.
Any ideas.

Have you got a 0V strap from the 0V terminal of the battery to the radiator support panel?
From memory on a HJ there is a large group 0V lug on the end of a black wire under the dash that bolts to the side of the body above the driver's side kick panel.
Check in those locations. The other way to check if it is a wiring issue is simply run a wire from the battery 0V terminal and touch it to the metal frame of the dash and see if the lights come on. |

I assume you are referring to an HX or HZ GTS dash, because the HJ dash has one red & one blue light in the centre of the instruments, above the steering column. The GEN (charge) light for HJ/HX/HZ GTS is within the voltmeter gauge assembly. The handbrake light will should light up when the ignition switched on & the lever is puled up. If this doesn't work then access the switch & short the yellow wire the ground. The brake fail light should light up when the ignition switch is in the cranking (starting) position. Another way to test the brake fail light is to short both switch terminals together & to ground. The brake fail switch is located at the proportioning valve junction block. OK Hk you have done it again.. I admit I have had more than my fair share of black label in my time,knocked off all but one in the ctn in a session....mixed with ppl in the wrong circles,maybe lived a life under a rock...So you are going to give me a answer that will make me want jump of a cliff...pull the triger of a exploding devise or just die of embarrassment ...I have have googled it,I done the look up thing on XOS...I have asked around BUT ... WTF is a "OV" strap?...I mean being connected to the radiator support we know what it is...Never heard it called that...Like...(hey johnno...just grab the OV strap and bring over) I need to go and get re employed or something...this retirement is killing me. Battery terminal has a + and - terminal. The + one is 12V. The - is 0V. Measuring between them gives you 12V or -12V depending which way you put your meter on. The strap that runs from the 0V or - terminal to the body/frame is a 0V strap or if you like - strap, so that devices in the car get 12V between the 12V terminal and the frame of the car. People sometime incorrectly refer to the strap as being an "Earth" or "Ground" strap which on a car is totally incorrect as there is no earth or ground reference on a car. In industry for field 24Vdc control the 0V side of the power supply is normally grounded so then the 0V is ground or earth referenced. Plus 0V is quicker to type than "negative" and if I type - terminal it doesn't read right. |

Ahah...Sort of makes sense.... I remember back when the Poms had a positive earth on our land Rovers...I guess on others as well.I was seeing it as OV not 0V...my bad...thx. I don't feel so suicidal now...LOL....I think :) Edited by user Monday, 3 July 2017 9:10:14 AM(UTC)
