Initially in HK only GTS327. Early GTS only had 5" (20-H5 is an L30, M35 car with 5" rims). After maybe July 1968 build they became pretty much standard on all HK GTS optioned with V8, and then on HT-HG they were standard on V8 GTS.

Hi HK, l have a late Dec V8 GTS with 5"rims. When they had a Banjo instead of the Salisbury did they use the 5"rims instead of the 6". Cheers Bazza.

Rally rims and Salisbury became standard around the start of August 1968 IIRC, although I do remember Warren stating a while back that rally rims were not always fitted. I didn't think you could get a banjo in a GTS with 307 after July 1968 though. July 22 pricing shows the only V8 power train combinations available on GTS as:

L30 and M35 with G88 or G94.
L30 and M21 with G88, G89 or G94.

G88 is 3.36 LSD Salisbury.
G89 is 3.55 LSD Salisbury.
G94 is 3.08 LSD Salisbury.
G90, G91, G92, G93 and G95 (banjo 3.9, 3.55, 2.78, 3.08 and 3.36 respectively) are listed for 6cyl only.

The HK Engineering documentation also shows an amendment late in July 1968 where it looks like banjo removed from GTS V8.

Byron, just to change subject a little, your paperwork indicates that after july '68 the banjo was replaced with the salisbury in the 307 GTS. my Hk Brougham was finish built in late april '69 and was probably amongst early HT's on the line so is it possible the 3.36 salisbury that I bought it with back in 1990 is original? there's no factory hump in front of the 25 gallon tank that sits above it either so I guess they where installed by the old bloke I bought it from.

Only in auto V8 GTS, manual was always Salisbury. There are so few of those early V8 auto GTS's left it's impossible to know how many were fitted with banjos.
Brougham was always banjo and 5" rims afaik. There were a few specials (like Broughmaro) but all but those were banjos. You will find 3.36 and sometimes 3.08 Salisbury in 5litre/308 auto Premiers but most were banjo too.

My GTS V8 is late Dec 68 out of Melb and has no hump in the floor or the hump in the tank. l think either Ben or Warren told me years back that Banjo on early and some late HK GTS V8's. l presumed that they must have fitted 5"rims when they fitted a Banjo. Cheers Bazza

Is it 100% documented as an original V8?

Yes, it came with the original owner protection plan with the owner identification filled out by the local Holden dealer with engine no 30745###K0708 and delivery date of 24-12-68. The car spent from 1968 to 1983 with the original owner who l know and do plumbing work for before l purchased it. l have also talked to one of the dealer mechanic who worked on the car and wanted to buy it before l beat him to it.

I spoke to Ben about it as it is an intriguing one.

It appears that HK GTS from late July 1968 automatically comes with Salisbury if V8 optioned. However there is the odd car where for whatever reason someone has wanted a 2.78:1 rear axle and in those cases a banjo would be fitted. All other ratios ie 3.08, 3.36 or 3.55 would be Salisbury. The amount made after July 1968 probably you'd count on one hand though. Remember that the standard combination in any V8 auto HK other than GTS was L30, M35, G92 (2.78) and G80 (LSD) although in theory once GMH started making the V8 banjo centres you should have been able to get one without LSD, never seen one though. In theory you could option a 3.08 banjo in these (not GTS) or a 3.36 Salisbury too, except Brougham where possibly you could get 3.08 banjo only (although never seen or heard of one).

As for 5" rims, it is a weirdo. From my experience all V8 HK GTS's I've ever seen have the 6" spare wheel brackets other than 20-H5. But apparently if the car got the standard HK GTS tyres (6.95x14 I think they are) regardless of M21 or M35 it got 5" rims. If D70 tyres were ordered then 6" rally rims were fitted. If radius rods were ordered then rally rims were mandatory. At some stage during HK it appears the decision was made to make radius rods standard with GTS L30 M21 thus rally rims were fitted. This time may possibly align with the time the decision was made to fit radius rods and rally rims standard to V8 HT GTS.

Hi, forgot about the 6" spare wheel bracket . Checked and it doesn't have one and l did one rotation of the rear wheel and the diff yoke turned somewhere between 2 1/2 and 3 turns. Would that make it 2.78:1

It will be stamped on the little plate behind the diff yoke. In any case a V8 banjo will have a long bottom bolt and can only be 3.08 or 2.78. If yours rotated what you say then that should be 2.78. The LSD might be buggered though, does it have LSD stickers under the boot lid and on the driver's door jamb?

Checked the plate under the yoke as l thought they were stamped but couldn't find anything on it. Has both yellow caution stickers still on the boot and door jam. Did Banjo and Salisbury use the same lubricant GM 9985035

Yes, it is obvious when you look at the bottom of the banjo.
Hump is obvious in both the tank and the car - you know quickly if it has one or not. Sounds like a clone of 20-H5: 307, 'glide and banjo with 5" rims. What we don't know yet is if 20-H5 is 2.78 or 3.08 LSD originally - it was fitted with a 3.08 Salisbury early in its life, possibly fitted under warranty as it looked like it'd been there forever.

The original owner was an accountant in Melbourne and used to travel between there and the western district to his farm so l presume he ordered it with the 2.78 for a lazy cruiser.

He must have had a really good friend who was an influential dealer, or it was an internal car - when was it purchased?
