From a recent post on the Shannon's Club forum. Original text. A Chevrolet 400 from 'the factory" And a GTS too!
HAVE JUST FOUND A 1979 GTS PANEL VAN IN NEW ZEALAND, 25,000KM ON ORIGINAL TYRES. THIS IS A MATCHING NUMBERS CAR FITTED AND SOLD NEW WITH A 400 CHEV VERIFIED WITH ORDINAL PAPERS. HE WAS TOLD THAT THE CAR WAS AUSSI BUILT CAR IMPORTED INTO NEW ZEALAND BY HOLDEN NZ AS A 6 CYLINDER. NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT INTRODUCED CARLESS DAYS FOR ANY CAR UNDER 2000KG DUE TO THE FUEL CRISIS IN WHICH THEY DROPPED IN 1980. HOLDEN NEW ZEALAND FITTED THE CHEV TO BRING THE CAR OVER 2000KG SO IT COULD BE USED 7 DAYS A WEEK. THE CAR WAS RE TAGGED BY HOLDEN NEW ZEALND WITH NO WEIGHT RECORDED ON TAG. THIS DOSE MAKE SENSE. COULD THIS BE THE HOLLY GRAIL OF ALL HOLDEN A 1 OF 1 CAR SOLD NEW THE MOST POWERFUL HOLDEN EVER SOLD NEW OF ITS TIME OR AM I DREAMING. IT WAS SOLD NEW AND IS A MATCHING NUMBERS CAR LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR THOUGHTS.

Hmm. All well and good, but how is a 400ci SBC going to make a HZ van over 2000kg? A HZ Sandman van was 1544kg, add on 27kg for optioning L31 and M41. That is still only 1571kg (1568kg for XX7 van). A 400ci SBC in 1979 is only going to add another 100kg at most. Edited by user Wednesday, 26 July 2017 6:42:23 AM(UTC)

Well .....this is a good one . You could not get a 'GTS' panel van , a HQ Statesman fitted with factory 350 engine (same appox weight as a 400) was around 1500kg so a long way from over 2000kg of this van ? . This van may sound unbelievable , but NZ rules were very free in the late 70s and early 80s , In 1980 ,I put a 308 & TH350 into my UC Sunbird as there were no compliance rules ,just tell the insurance company ...now has a 308 in it. Case No1 , HQ kingswood ,Blackwell Motors new , had a 202 in it from factory, dealer fitted 253 & trimatic and was regoed and sold new as 253 Kingswood . Case 2 , VH SLX Commodore I owned , 253 & Trimatic , P/S also Blackwells new , always wondered way it had no Disc brake diff but ,years later found out it had started life as a 3.3 SLX .In NZ what you wrote on the documents when first regoing a car , that was it forever. I have seen so many mistakes on NZ rego papers over the years . Mark. |

Thanks guys, for the weights and the NZ rego info. I wasn't sure of the weights involved, but I knew a 400 SBC wouldn't tip a HZ over the 2000kg mark.
