Hi All,
What is the best plating methodology to restore the alloy scuff plates for a HQ Belmont. Are they anodised and what happens to them if they try...
thanks,
Mauser

Mauser I have to ring my guy that has been doing all my plating tomorrow I will ask him I am sure I enquired earlier in the year about the same and was told basically you cannot replicate the factory finish though Im not sure if metal polishing is an option will get back to you unless someone else has some knowledge on it

Are we talking about the plates along the lower edge of the door opening which also hold down the rubber floor mat ?
If so, I believe that these are made of steel, not aluminium alloy, so anodising is out.
I think they are painted, similar to the centre strip on side body mouldings on EH.

Hi Dr Terry,
Ok well the reason I questioned if they were an alloy is the weight. I didn't want to bring the door pieces up and put them on the kitchen scales so I weighed the short bits that are behind the seat. The chrome ones are 196 grams and the alloy ones are 160 grams.
The longer pieces definitely feel lighter than the chrome ones. Does chrome weigh that much?
So if they are just painted that is an easy fix. I would think the colour would be similar to the silver on the GTS grille. Looks like some sort of clear went over the top as well.

Mauser spoke with my plater today and he assures me they were zinc plated? and charges between 50-80 dollars depending on condition to re plated them, i am doing a sandy like yourself but undecided which way to go as i have a good pair of chrome ones sitting here and my thoughts are that back in the day it would have been an easy upgrade the dealer could have made for the buyer if buyer so desired a chrome pair maybe ill get a pair done and see what i think.

Mauser
The difference between 160gm & 196gm is only 36gm, so yes, a layer of plated chrome could easily weight that much. 36gm is only about 1.3 ounces. Chromium is after all a solid metal, which probably weighs around the same as steel, whereas most aluminium alloys weigh around one third of that. So an alloy plate of the same thickness would be only about 70gm. I'm sure that the steel scuff plates seen in Belmonts are the same as those in Kingswoods as well. AFAIK it was only the Premiers, Statesman & Monaros which got theirs chrome plated. Dr Terry |

They are steel as Dr Terry says. The only Belmont or Holden commercial examples that got chrome scuff plates were those that were upgraded to Kingswood trim spec, ie HX and HZ Sandman. I always thought the base spec ones were painted but they may well be a zinc coat. I know it wore off easily and became polished rust. |

Thanks XX7Q and Dr Terry.
Maybe if Mr Jones has recorded the paint number I could spray some and see what finish I can get. I have a couple of sets to match it against but they didn't hold up to father time well to get a good colour sample. I don't know if I'm being a bit silly with including them but wanted to keep it HQ Belmont as much as I could when I already have the bits and pieces here. (one exception is definitely going to be carpet)
I thought HX/Z Sandman panel vans got the chrome treatment on the door scuffs and taillight surrounds because their trim level was based on a Kingswood, where HJ Holden vans as well as the HQ Belmont ones came with only the plain janes.
Running into cars with un-chromed ones are not common as it seems every van, ute and tonner has upgraded them. If the originals are just painted like you have alluded to then I guess you can get the chrome removed from a set if necessary.
Thanks for the replies.

Mauser Mauser I think I have a fair idea what your trying to achieve as i am also trying to do a pretty close factory resto on my van but I recall my parents 71 HQ Kingswood sedan with the plain jane scuff plates and they were pretty shitty looking if you were going with the original vinyl flooring i would probably agree thats the way to go but if your going carpet as I am also the chrome look way better but each to their own would interested to see the finish product I would be getting them zinc plated not painting then

if you're trying to go Belmont why carpet? Vinyl is so much easier to clean and keeps it original. Zinc plated scuff panels to suit.

I seem to think the ones off my Monaro GTS are polished stainless steel, the same material as used on the outer part of GTS sports discs. Not the best quality though for it can rust. The centre part of those discs I believe is Chrome plated steel., occasionally you'll find one with the copper plating exposed. The plating used to prepare for chrome plating. The ones off an early HK kingswood I wrecked were I believe zincplated steel. A bit like the plating on the brake master cylinder cap. Certainly not painted.

the HK ones are chrome plated. You can see the chrome peeling/flaking off on the under side when they start to rust at the screw holes.

Nope, chrome. Every pair I have ever had from Kingswood upwards were chrome. When you turn them over you can see they are chrome. The Belmont ones and the Kingswood up are the same, just one is chrome and the other coated or painted. Just steer clear of WB ones as the holes are in different spots. |

AFAIK in HQ, both Belmont & Kingswood have the plain look (plated/coated) scuff plates, while Premier, GTS & above got the chrome-plated ones. Dr Terry |

Not the case in HJ to HZ. Not sure about HQ. May not be all HJ either, Program Change Request 5522 for HJ is I think addition of bright sill plates to HJ Kingswood. I don't know the date of it though and if it is for all HJ Kingswood or just ute. Edited by user Tuesday, 29 August 2017 9:03:00 AM(UTC)

HX/HZ are both Kingswood & up, but I haven't got an HJ catalogue handy ATM, I will check. Dr Terry |
