A supposed HD X2 turned up at a mechanic friends the other day and hadn't been started for a long time. It looks fairly original and has all the Premier bits and pieces. The car doesn't seem to have a lot of rust just a little bit around where the trim clips holes are near rear screen.
Can you tell from the plates if it is an original X2 and does the number stamped in the firewall have any significance and match anything on the plates? It has a 4-speed but the column looks like it could of been auto.
Thanks

On Melbourne built cars there is a code on the insert line that is related to the engine and gearbox. All other plants there is no way to tell.
The number on the firewall is different sequence tot he numbers on the two tags.

Thanks for replying Warren,
This is a Sydney built car. I read about that the engine should have a prefix of 179X so Ill check that and get back.
Do the body tag numbers indicate the options that were on the vehicle?
It says the body HD235-xxxxx-S - I think the 235 means Premier Trim 868-D68 Paint 587-6812 Insert Top 585-5084
Thanks,
Mauser

179K or 186K for X2, obviously HD is the 179. 186K is both X2 and 186S in HR.
235 means Premier sedan.
Rest is paint and trim.
The package code goes on the insert line of tags of bodies out of the Dandenong body plant as Warren said. It also sometimes appears in the owners manual on the VID Certificate. The code is from memory 1xx for manual X2 or 3xx for auto. |

179 X2 engine number prefix started with 179X. The K prefix was only on HR 186 X2's and 186S motors. |

Is that so? Were all HD 179 prefixed with 179X? I'm sure I have seen a 179K engine number. |

I've never seen a 179K block. All HD X2 blocks I've seen were 179X |

I just checked Dr Terry's book and he has 179X too. I'm sure I have seen a 179K prefix before, it was an engine out of a car though. |

In this case the engine number is nothing like those. (it goes like Mxxxxxx) So it could just be a HD with some bits added. No way to tell without the engine. Mauser Edited by user Friday, 8 September 2017 3:58:19 PM(UTC)

That is an EH 179 if it starts with M. AFAIK HD were the first to get the capacity as the first 3 numbers in the engine number. |
