I've been restoring a Hk Panel Van and because the motor trans combo wasn't original when I bought it I've decided to install a 307 with a column shift p/glide. When it came to refitting the wiper motor (with the new engine, trans installed) I first selected a Lucas wiper because it was the "best looking" original I had but later I noticed that when I went to pull the dip stick out for the auto the wire connector fitting was bloody close to the dip stick. With my mitts I could barely get my fingers in there. I went back to the box of motors and noticed a shorter length motor which was a Preslite. On closer investigation I've noticed the wire outlet was further to the left, as in looking at it from the front of the engine bay, and the angle of the motor was further away from the firewall. When I installed the Preslite I had a lot more room to get to the dip stick. After looking at my other 307 Hk's they have Preslite wipers. Was it standard to fit Preslite wiper motors when a 307 p/glide combo was ordered?

I don't how period accurate you want it to be, but there are two possibilities for HK, the 7435187 Lucas, which has three rivets on the end of the motor can, and the long Preslite, 7432407.
Melbourne cars will typically have the Lucas and Sydney cars the Preslite, although this is not always the case.
The short Preslite, 2815135, is a HT/HG thing, and the corresponding Lucas are 7448666 for HT and early HG and 2809612 for later HG.
Both the long and short Preslite have the electrical socket mounted on ears screwed to the casting, and the long and short Preslite have the same casting. The socket for the Preslite is around 1" closer to the firewall than the Lucas variants which have socket slotted into the casting.
Apart from the strong tendency for Melbourne cars to use Lucas I don't believe there was any discrimination in what wiper motor was used for a particular engine/trans combination.

Thanks gm5735, My v8's are Melb built. I think i'll stay with the Preslite purely for the extra room around the dip stick. I'll check to see if I have a long Preslite, they are easy to tell apart from the Lucas with the different wire socket.

The Preslite name stamped into the end of the motor can is a give-away! As is the colour - Preslite motor cans are yellow passivated zinc, while the Lucas cans are natural zinc.
The Preslite is a better device too.
