Just as Holden are stopping proper engines into cars, Killa in QLD have an LS3 and 6L80E conversion done, tested complianced and costed. Way cool. Might at last have a contender for my Hilux's replacement. This gives you 304kW and 550nm (flywheel). My Hilux has about 190kW and 600nm at the treads, but this would be way better!

http://performancedrive....v8-conversion-kit-1222/

I have been looking an I can buy a 2016-17 LTZ dual cab auto demo for $43k. Or the base models are cheap as chips new (like $34k for a dual cab).

A mate was claiming an up grade tune with both of his manual Colorado's, I said that Holden has limited the manuals torque down from the auto 500NM to 450NM because the box is just to weak to hack it, not to mention that they have a delay time on shifting setup so you can not just hammer from one gear to the next slamming it through the gears, this setup stops all power as you change gear and then starts once you are in gear with a delay that gives you the shits just driving normal, let alone when up it. it's the biggest shit box manual box I have ever driven.
He was on about 600NM and 180KW out of the 2.8L, I have never looked at 4 cyl diesels as reliable when driven hard let alone supped up, 6 cyl diesels can hack a lot but not the 4 cyl, I have seen more 4 cyl diesels blown up than you could poke a stick at.

But as for putting V8's in them 4X4 I don't see the point of doing it all.

Because the diesels are unreliable cr@p and way too small for the actual towing capacities of the cars let alone the claimed capacity.

Unreliable? Touch would between four D4D toyotas we have owned, 645000km without one problem. Oh rats chewed the wiring off the engine in one Prado we had. I rate them and they suit what we need.
A V8 in any of the current 4WD Utes would be good. But realistically they are such light duty POS that you can't use them as a work ute anyway. They are great as a car on gravel roads though. That's where the V8 would be good.
I reckon I would like a Dodge Ram or wonder what those Toyota Tundra are like.

what about the Toyota landcruiser, they come out standard with a single turbo v8 diesel. My neighbor has had his for 4 years without a problem and being a tiler he loads it up all the time.

Yes. Get any Toyota dealer to tell you the truth about what % of engine warranty claims on Hilux and Prado are diesels. Basically round it up to 100%. Injectors are wear items at less than 150,000km, many $1000. Gutless junk apart from the current V6 Amarok as it has a Cayenne engine, but buying a VW is like flushing $100 bills.

Tundra and Ram are too big, won't suit everyday driving. I looked at a V8 petrol F250 but too big, same size. Ram1500 are coming soon and if they are sensible they'll offer the 5.7L Hemi. These are a few inches bigger overall than a BT50 or Ranger.

All I want is a car that can safely tow 2500kg, be an everyday driver that fits in shopping centre car parks and can safely overtake on NSW roads when towing.

Manual only and uncomfortable to sit in, plus way to expensive

good luck! is there anything out there that can tow 2500kg, overtake on a highway loaded and be expected to fit in a pissy little shopping centre car park that most old holdens can't. sounds like you want a Mack truck in a Mini Cooper shell.

I have it now (almost) but it just clicked over 105,000km. I like to change out cars before 125,000km normally although I may keep this one longer until I see what is going on with the Ram1500 V8.
The reason I say "almost" is the 2005 to 2011 Hilux can only tow 2250kg, but they updated it to 2500kg in 2012.
My backup plan was to buy a low km V6 auto 2015 (pre update) and swap all my suspension, canopy, supercharger, exhaust, dual battery, winch, engine driven compressor, Recaro seat etc over. The 2015 update is no good as they recessed the engine into the firewall and the supercharger won't fit, although the auto update can tow 2650kg legally. The LS3 Colorado may change all that though.

My mate with 2 Colorado's has a VF SSV ute with 375KW and he rants about the power of the Colorado's and the fuel economy, recons they are the best 4x4 in the world, I can't believe his rants, I don't like driving them much at all.

I like the old 1974 to 1985 type F100's with a little 351 V8 worked the right way they can get up and go well.

I don't care about economy. If I have a 1900kg vehicle with over 260kW and 550nm that does around 20mpg combined town/highway and towing I am happy. That is better than a 202 auto HQ to HZ ute managed when they were new.

I can tell you that my Hilux towing my 400+kg 7x5 box trailer used to easily out accelerate a dual cab auto Ranger, let alone a Colorado and that was before it was supercharged!

Funny you mention a 70's F'y. I know where there is a good old mid 70's 351 manual F250 (Canadian). I have looked at it a few times thinking 400 SBC or 454 BBC and TH400 both which I have in my shed. It isn't hard to find a TH400 to NP or Dana transfer adapter out of a Jeep. Biggest hassle is adapting a Patrol power steering box and fitting some Vintage Air. Not a very comfortable long distance vehicle though and with the original diffs probably would be lucky to get 10mpg! I did suss out an Eaton supercharger kit for the GM 6.5L V8 diesel at Bullet Supercars a few months back, one of those would be good in an old F-truck.

What exactly did they change when they updated the 2012 Hilux to 2500kg?
Looking at the photos of these new dual cab Utes breaking in half I doubt any of them can really handle a load. Flimsy chassis seemingly. I know my last single cab Hilux ended up with the gearbox rubbing on the floor after going over a rock on my farm. The cross member was/is as weak as water. I had to swap the cross member over as it was bent. I don't abuse my cars either. My old 91 Hilux is a much stronger ute. But I love my 2011 SR5 D4D dual cab.
To be honest, the creature comforts of a Hilux on a Cruiser chassis and the old turbo 6 diesel cruiser engine would be my choice. But diesel suits me as it's a farm ute.

Nothing. Just increased the GCM by 250kg. Until the post 2015 update the Hilux tow capacity was the GCM minus the GVW, basically tow capacity was quoted at the vehicle's maximum load (GVW). Now it is a claimed tow capacity, and GCM minus GVW is far less than the claimed tow capacity.
I'd prefer a VF's creature comforts and driveline on a Patrol chassis. There is someone importing the Tanzania spec Landcruiser and ompliancing them, they are a na 4.2 straight 6 diesel or the same V6 in the Hilux. Still the same uncomfortable thing as a 79 or 76 Series sold here though.

I hear the new ranger raptor that’s coming is powered by a twin turbo 2lt diesel with 10 sp auto only. Imagine that with a few kays on it

Unreal. Why won't they just put a decent size engine in them? 10 speed? Might as well just use a variable sheeve pulley and be done with it.

I think it is a 2.0L twin turbo petrol engine, part of their Ecoboost lineup. Same engine as the Ecoboost Falcon, Land Rover Discovery etc. The Mustang has a 2.3L version. The engine they should be fitting is the 3.5L V6 twin turbo Ecoboost, 336kW and 691Nm. This is what is going into US F150. But we’ll end up with the dunger 4cyl and the current hand grenade 3.2L diesel. The idea I think is to get people away from this diesel obsession as diesel vehicles will struggle to comply with emissions laws soon. It is the first step towards hybrid trucks I think.

Just heard the 2,0L engine is the base spec engine for the Ranger to replace the 2.2L. Top end Ranger and the pretend Raptor will keep the 5cyl 3.2 L engine.
