From the net

Datsun DP411-M Bluebird SS
The SS was a performance sedan version of the 1965 Bluebird. Essentially the same as the deLuxe version of the 411, except that the SS has a pair of 38mm Hitachi side draught carburettors, very similar to those used on the Datsun Fairlady sports car. This increased the power to about 77hp. The SS had a 4 speed floor change gearbox and bucket seats. The only external difference is the SS badges on the C pillars.

Datsun Bluebird SSS R411
The SSS was a P411 fitted with the engine and gearbox from the Datsun Fairlady SP311 sports car. The trim level was similar to that of the Bluebird deLuxe, but it had a different dashboard with three large round dials. It has SSS badges on the rear pillars as well as on the grille and at the back of the car.

If you're going to count other GM brands which GM-H sold here (i.e. non-Holden badged) I'm sure that there could be some Bedford 4x4 trucks in the 60s, or maybe even the 50s.

What about the war-time Chevy Blitz ?? They were made here by GM-H, the LUV was a full SUP import.

first Holden 4x4 was the Overlander I think. Hq stationwagon body on what I believe was a Nissan chassis. Not factory built though.

Later iteration of the Luv (as an Isuzu though)? First Holden badged 4x4 the KB Rodeo or first Jackaroo?

Overlander wasn’t a Holden, it used a Holden chassis though. Overlanders were built using a Holden (or Statesman) vehicle but they were not built or complianced by GMH. Nothing Nissan about them, all GM/GMH and Dana driveline.

I don't know much about the Overlanders besides having spotted one or two over the years but I found this write up about them on the oppositelock website.
http://oppositelock.kinj...nder-4-4-ute-1519727665

Launceston-based Vehicle Engineering and Modifications built the Holden HJ-HZ-based Overlander 4WD models. Between 1976-89, 120 examples were built, using Holden mechanicals and a Dana transfer case and front and rear off- road axles, wheels and tyres and suspension. The conversion was created in conjunction with Holden, and could be had in either wagon, ute, or one-tonne ute body styles.

To say they were done “in conjunction with Holden” is a bit of a stretch. Arthur did all the work and warranted everything he added. They are not a Holden vehicle as such, not much to compare them to either really. The closest I can think of is something like a new 200 Series converted to a dual cab with a Dana60 portal axle conversion, then re-complianced with a new GVW and first registered as a commercial vehicle. Also could do the same from the same builder using say a 12 month old 200 Series, Arthur did the same built new or converted used cars for customers.

The article says the conversion was created in conjunction with Holden not that the conversions were done/performed in conjunction with Holden.

That isn’t correct either from my understanding. Arthur told me the idea and the Engineering was all his.

I agree with that fully.

Seeing as it was Tasmanian show, the cost to ship it to him and then back would not be the best for value.

He must of got a new cars at real good deals and then convert them or could one just toddle down and get yours convert.

Must of came with a rust proofing deal as well for sure.

I liked the Premier wagon overlander back in the day and said so, if only I could of afford one that would be what I would of got. only for many 4x4 people bagging the overlanders full on, they loved their bustard arse old crappy rubbish, with cushions for seats land rovers d'oh!

I always thought of the Luv is just as much a GMH thing as the first Rodeo, they did not have chev on the tail gate did they and then became a Isuzu I think later on.

They did not sell well, maybe if it had a Holden badge on they would of sold more.

I have a test of them against the Hilux and it did well, but it was not as good in the real hard 4x4 going.

The LUV was an Isuzu but sold in North America and also here as a Chevrolet. Old Charlie McCarron used to talk about meeting an Isuzu delegation and they asked what more they could do with the Luv. He said build a 4x4 and apparently they did. But I don’t think it became a 4x4 until 1978, and GMH rebranded it Isuzu KB in 1977.

I think the first 4WD to wear a Holden badge & sold in all Holden showrooms would be the first Rodeo (Dec 80) it beat the Jackaroo by almost 12 months (released in Nov 81).

Can anyone remember who you bought a Chevrolet Luv, and later (until it became the Holden Rodeo) the Isuzu KB from? Bedfords, Chevrolet C20-C60 and K20 etc. were bought through GMH Truckpower dealerships, not from your normal GMH/Holden dealership where you'd buy a Holden, Torana, Gemini etc. from. Were the Luv and Isuzu also GMH Truckpower sales? I can sort of remember the Rodeo and Jackeroos in normal Holden dealerships in the early 80's, and I remember when my dad bought a new CF Bedford around 1976-7 it came through Young and Green's Truckpower yard in Kotara Newcastle which was where their spare parts, service and holding area was (called Holden Ave BTW). Young and Green were also a sales dealership for Vehicle Engineering and Modifications (Overlanders) and this yard was where I remember seeing Overlanders for sale and for the first time. I'm pretty sure it was that van in the link in post 48 above with the Young and Green logo on the door that I saw circa 1976-7
