Royal Umber Paint as used by Holden and Ford

Hi Fellas
Just doing some research into EH paint codes and colours and I see that the brown that was introduced towards the end of the EH run is known as ‘ Royal Umber’ . The same name is used for a brown colour that was used by Ford on a small number of XY Falcons. Does anyone know if this is the same paint colour used by the two manufacturers or is it two different colours with the same name ?

Is it a fleet colour, or adopted as a fleet colour? I found an L30 optioned HQ LS in Royal Umber many years ago, and I think it was a HK or HT commercial we found too. Might have been a fleet colour for a sewage company as the colour is pretty close to right! |

I’m not sure if it is a fleet colour, but it seems to pop up here and there. There are 3 XY GTs and one XY GT HO that are known to have been painted in it and you wouldn’t normally find one of those being used as a lowly fleet car. But why would you only make 4 cars in a certain colour? It hardly seems worth it.
I recall it being reasonably popular as an EH shade but was wondering if the Ford version is in fact the same or just the same name

Based on the info available on the Spies Hecker website, the 2 colours are:
Royal Umber - Holden - 1G038 (notes a year of 1964)
Royal Umber - Ford - EY161
Knowing Ford codes are usually single letter, the code does look like a fleet/special order.
You can't access the actual formulas online anymore like you used to, but it would be worth looking at the formula for each to compare them, and that will tell you if they're the same colour or not.
Going through the 80s & 90s, many Holden & Ford "fashion" colours that came & went (and weren't the usual red/white/silver) seemed to be the same or a very similar colour - used on one make one year, and a few years later appearing on the other - like Cerulean on the VK being similar to Everglade on the XF, the light green Everglade on the VL appearing on the EA etc.
It wouldn't surprise me if it's the same Royal Umber code. Ironically, one search showed it (by name only) as a Euro fleet colour - from 2002, for Maxi-Trans. |

Royal Umber available Feb 72 to end of Feb 73 all HQ Holden & LJ Torana model variants.

Fleet cars weren’t always lowly. Remember as an extreme a certain Shell Yellow GTS350?
I have seen Statesmans, 350 HQ’s, Premiers etc in fleet colours, they were the MD’s cars and the rest were low comp Belmont wagons etc. |

Waltons Blue was a fleet colour that made it's way onto VK Brocks (SL Group A).
There's numerous VK & VL done in Tuxedo Black (not available on the charts).
That's why I prefer to refer to them as fleet/special order colours, as you don't always know the true circumstances behind the cars that were ordered in those colours. |
