Hi i recently bought a Bedford truck farm fresh tipper it is 4175 kg tare and 10175 gross the serial/vin is TJ CAB-20187 I was hoping to get some help in decifering the number to under engine size type and start to orginize some parts for a rebuild any help would be appreciated cheers in advance Raf

What is on the body plate and the ADR plate? As I said I have some info but would probably need to see these plates to compare to what I have.

I have an order procedure for these from GMH for 1969-70 that shows GMH sold J1, J2, J3, J5, J6S and J6L. The biggest of these is 7tons (imperial) carrying capacity. In petrol engines J1-3 had a 214ci engine, and J5-J6L had 300ci. The J5 had a 330ci diesel option. As yours is kg though it must be a later example.

The 2/75 order procedure shows: CDJ1B, CDJ3B, CDL0B, CFM3B, CFN3B, CFQ1B, CFQ2B. Looking at the GVW listed for these (in lbs) i'd say yours is a 6 or 7 ton which is the CFN or CFQ which had a 292ci Chevrolet petrol 6cyl engine in them in Australia. Good news is these are gutsy engines, thirsty though. You can bolt a SBC straight in where it sits, but you don't want an engine short of a 3.75" stroke as anything less would have less torque where you want it than you have now. So this means at least a 377ci engine (4" bore with 400 crank). The 292 has a 4.125" stroke. If you do upgrade to a V8 make sure you use the flywheel off the 292, or change it to a TH400.

As for year, it has to be 1974 or later as it has kg on the plates.

I havent found the chassis number yet need to give it a huge clean to track it down but those are the plates in the engine bay hope it helps cheers

It was painted on the fuel tank it has huge plate welded to the chassis. I believe it was a council truck that may of had some out back engineering on it. Im trying to track a old rego numberto back track it thru the transport dept.i went to the courthouse today to get some help the chassis number she had related to a maroon or red one mine is currently a cream colour it was also a 1962 model.so ill keep looking to see where i end up

OK, the kg ratings were a furphy as they are not by GMH. What you have is a J5. It was available as a 300ci Bedford petrol or a 330ci Bedford diesel. Only gearbox was a 4spdmanual, but there was an optional 2spd diff as well. It was available as a 4, 5 or 6 ton carrying capacity. By your TARE and GROSS metric figures I'd say a 6 ton.

Colours available in 1969 were: red, green, ivory, "any" and "special". 501 is Coast Ivory. The fact the paint is a 568 paint line though may be the best way to date it. 568 paint was around from the end of 1963 (EH) but reverted to 585 from the start of HD or thereabouts. 568 came back again at the start of HK but only on 510. The rest of the HK paints didn't change to 568 until about the start of Monaro later in 1968. As your Bedford doesn't have a VIN plate it cannot be 1968, so must be late 1963 to 1965 as it has 568 paint. As well as the BODY plate and the GVW plate it should have a little PSN plate on it, same as what EH-HR had next to the BODY plate. I can see it just above the BODY plate in the images. that will nail its build date.

Wow thats great i belive you are on the right track i did see that label bit sidnt pay it any attention as most indicators spoke about the chassis number from memory the last 4 numbers where 1960 but i wont be able to confirm till later in the week the truck is a little while away.thank you very much for the info i will confirm the badge as soon as i can Raf

Also i will add it does have the optional extra of the split diff it was very suprising to find that and all the lights working wipers working blinkers all work. Just need to figure out how to restore it it is very original and obviously cared for. The engine requires some work hoping it related to toming and vaccum leaks once again appreciate you help thank you

If you get me that PSN we can date it easily. The old 300ci Bedford engine, not sure how you are going to go with that. There appears to be service parts like gaskets and fuel pumps on Ebay, and there is this:

Probably best to get the carby off it and send it for overhaul, clean the fuel tank out and make sure the fuel pump is OK. ULP may be a big issue for it though, but given they are only about 8:1 it'll run on 91 OK, just needs upper cylinder lubricant.

Hey that was really nice of ypu i bought the book definetly a must yeah im looking forward to starting work on it. Going to get busy cleaning it down kit out the carby check the timing kit out the fuel pump it has a electric one at the moment so hoping to go back to original but i will update u if you would like to see it.

I had a chat to my neighbor about your truck yesterday. He was the service manager for the Patterson Cheney truck division in the 60s and 70s.
Patterson Cheney had a special relationship with GM-H due to their proximity to the Dandenong plant and their engineering abilities. They built quite a few special trucks both for GM-H and for their own customers and developed a kit to retrofit 253/308 in the later TK Bedford, of which hundreds were sold.
They also did a few TJs with 253 or 308 engines. Apparently this is not a particularly good conversion as the rear cross member is a long way back in the chassis to accommodate the length of the 214/300 cu in Bedford engines and requires a substantial cantilevered extension forward to accommodate a Chev or Holden V8 installation.

A few things that may be of interest:

1/ The 214 has 6 bolts holding the rocker cover on, compared to 3 acorn nuts used in the 300 engine, which makes for ready identification of your engine. More than a few TJs were delivered with 214 engines and, according to my neighbor, were "Like sending a boy on a mans errand"

2/ Most of the Bedford spare parts ended up at at Don Kyatt motors in Melbourne. How much is left I cannot say, but they may be worth a try if you need parts.

3/ I have a copy of the original Bedford Mechanics pocket tune up card for TJ and TK if you would like a copy.

If it is an EH era build then this was assembled at the Valley Plant in (I think) Fortitude Valley in QLD. Body was probably built at Dandenong or Elizabeth.

As Geoff says some had 214ci engines (J1, J2 and J3), but yours is a J5 and if original and a petrol is a 300ci engine.
