That is the PSN, just a sequential number. I don’t have enough QLD EH to HR to pick a build date so i’ve asked someone else, will let you know when I get an answer.

If you're wondering what year it was made, a mate of mine bought a J3D a few weeks ago and we dated it by looking at the date code tag on the original radiator.
If it has its original glass you can work out the year by looking at the date codes on each of the windows too.

I asked the numbers guru on this one. That PSN dates to late EJ. PSN's reset at the start of EH apparently. So it is Valley plant assembly sometime in 1963 prior to EH volume production. Cab was most likely built, painted and hard trimmed at Woodville then freighted to QLD Valley plant where the truck was assembled. Not certain about the chassis, but based upon recent evidence here on Holden chassis transport I wouldn't mind betting the chassis was also built at Woodville and freighted.

I kinda like your idea about keeping it original, but if you are forced into an engine upgrade i'd be maybe trying to find an engine and maybe bellhousing or if not whole box out of a later (70's) 292 Chev 6 powered Bedford. You might even find a whole shagged truck so you get all the other stuff you need too like mounts, radiator tanks etc if they are different. Failing that not sure what modern engine short of a big SBC or BBC that would give you the torque required. You might be able to fit a big 6cyl diesel out of an 80's truck, like a 6L or 7L beastie.

It might be worth the trouble of getting the carby to a carb specialist. I've never been able to get them to go as well with a kit as carby shops seem to be able to do. It is like $350 for a full overhaul on a Quadrajet, so I can't see an old Bedford carb being more than a few hundred.

Mate, He's keen to do it himself. most of us prefer to do our own work and "give it a go". It's just a carby kit and a good look at the timing. Go for it raffi4698.

I got that and still stand by my statement as 100% correct. I'd do it myself too, as in remove it give it a clean and post off to a carby shop, then refit it once it gets back a week later. I know from experience that any time I have ever "just put a carby kit" into a carby they have never worked near as well as when properly overhauled.

You guys are both right i am a tinkera buth if i cant get it right ill call a brains trust and if i really mess it up ill pay money and typical tight arse lol. I have a friend you has a natural hand for petrol engine from all the years of racing speedway at the moment thought standing beside it is like watching phatom of the opera it would bring tears to your eyes (apparently). I has a list of parts on there way down to a original fuel but to replace the electric one that has been fitted. I am interested in your thoughts on the best way to go with the paint it has been repainted at some stage of its life and im yet to find a single hole from rust but i do like the result from what they do with ratrods preserving the old look paint whats your thoughts on it as far as paint treatment. Initially i thought i would just clean it throughly to see it in its natural state then sort it out so the engine ran nicely i have concerns of a burnt valve hence the carby and timing lights as it currently back firing through the exhaust.

I thought it might of had a birnt valve from the unleaded fuel but it might of been timing and the fact the oil bath was full of milky oil making it draw really hard. So im just waiting on the manual to nail down the right way to time it since there is no degree marks on the front for the timing light. I did get the diff split cable free and now the diff split works. And got the brakes working a breather hole was blocked from a hornet. We took stock of the hoses that need replacing. And order new brake hoses to be safe the center bearing on the drive needs replacing so a bit of work left to do but progress has been made

Just a tip, if you go with a diesel conversion be aware that your playing with what is essentially a truck designed for Britain. The radiator will not be big enough. We had a D model Bedford and it had been converted to a 6 Isuzu donk and 5 speed. It boiled its head off all the time. The D model is fairly uncommon.
Bedford’s really got shown up when International stayed building ACCOs here.

On the farm where we park our trucks there is a TJ Bedford which has just been dragged out of a lean to shed. The cab has been under cover for many years but the rear half has been out of the shed so the deck is rooted as well as the passenger side wheels as they had sagged into the ground when the tyres went flat.
I think it is a 300 petrol with a 4 speed/2 speed set up with a joey box gear stick on the left of the gear box. The motor turns over freely. I will probably get it going in the next couple of weeks. The cab doesn't appear to have any rust in it. The back window (unbroken) has fallen out of its hole when the rubber perished enough. The dash shows 72,000 on it but that could be more than once around the clock. I was told it could be the first time around the clock as it didn't go very far from home. The roof needs popping out as they used to throw hay on top and distribute it around the farm. It appears to be complete and all tags are there. I have no idea of its year of manufacture so I will take pics of the tags soon. They are assembling a pile of scrap near the old bedford and I believe the truck is for sale. But what is it worth?
Location is near Caboolture Qld.
Cheers,
Ron
PS: I used to drive S, J and TK bedfords back in the early 80's when I lived in Invercargill NZ. I also worked on 214 and 300 petrol engines doing tune ups and servicing etc. The dizzys and caps etc were similar to the old grey motor stuff.
