Why would you need one with keyless entry? I haven’t used a key in a door lock for ten years.

I agree with WBute.
You have the most important security aspect where an electronic opening and closing system is better than using a key. With car jacking now a common problem if you can open the doors quickly and lock them all just as quick then women feel a lot safer.
The majority of vehicles are predominantly one driver most of the time so opening the left door only happens on Sundays. I haven't seen anyone opening the left door for their partner in years and pressing a button seems to be the way to go.

You might find some spare left hand door locks in a box at the dealership with the cigarette lighters. Two of the most used items are the Bluetooth and GPS today and people wouldn't buy a car without them

My Mrs loved the fact that on both of her drive cars over the last 10-12 years (V2 CV8 and Lexus RX350) she could have it setup so that only the driver's door unlocked when she got in. Makes it near impossible for a bag snatcher or car jacker to make a surprise move.

The last car I drove regularly that needed a key to open it was my HZ Overlander.

Yeah it was a cost-saving move by the manufacturers, very few owners ever used the LH door lock barrel.

I does go back further than you might think. I believe the VS was the first Holden to delete it & many other car makers did around that same era. That's well over 20 years ago now.

We've actually gone 'full circle' on this, the FX & all Holden standards & commercials had no RH door lock barrel up until HR. Specials & Premiers had it as a 'luxury' feature.

I got caught out with an AU Falcon about 13 ywars back. Driver's lock was punched out in an attempted break-in. Company said don't bother fixing it - car was nearly up on lease, and I never used the lock anyway, because of keyless entry. That was until one morning, when it was absolutely bucketing down with rain, and the battery was flat..... NRMA bloke didn't know whether to get drenched trying to pop the lock with the thin stainless "rlong uler with a hook" type tool, or jack it up, climb under, and attach 12V to the starter terminal. Either way he was going to get soaked, and it took him about 5 minutes to get the door open. It was literally 2 days before the car was going back, and the 3 year old battery failed then.

I can confirm for Terry that it was VS that did away with the LH lock, and introduced 2-stage unlocking. It was a great feature to have. Ford have made it even easier since AU2 - you can choose via holding the lock & unlock keys on the remote if you want 2-stage unlocking or not (and in later cars it's selectable on the screen). It remembers the setting for that remote only, so if you wife wants 2-stage, and you want all-at-once, you can both agree....

I welded up the LH lock in my old daily VH SL/E in the 90s, as it was a weak point of entry for a crim, but kept the driver's lock in case it was needed (with some careful shielding). 2-stage unlocking would have been nice back then, rather that all at once like the Holden systems were until the mid 90s.
Cheers,

Mick

Off the top of my head, no. In the older cars it could be changed in the BCM. In the VE, it can be changed in the screen options in the dash. Perhaps look through the settings using the trip computer buttons to scoll through the screens? I don't know if VZ has the capability or not.

Does he have more than one key? And if he does, can you set different seat & mirror positions (in his Calais), and do they return to those settings when unlocked with that particular key?
Cheers,

Mick

Hi Warren. Yes, for VY onwards you can change the remote central locking from 1-stage to 2-stage (or vice-versa) by accessing the dash display menu when the ignition is first switched on.

There are many other features accessible in that menu. The owners manual has pretty good rundown.

I'm not 100% certain, but I believe that it can also be achieved in VT/VX using a Tech2 scanner.

Hi Terry, I have two different settings in my VZ CV8Z, one allows the radio to stay on after the ignition turned off, the other not. Will check owner manual on how to do it.

Yes Mick being Calais with priority key is nice feature.

I checked my VY ute and the radio to stay on can be changed in the same menu.

There are many other settings in the same menu; some are useful and some are rather interesting. In particular the stop watch Whistle

V2 came standard with 2 stage unlocking, and the Owner's Handbook says you have to get a dealer to change it to "all unlock" which I assume means using the dealer's Tech2 device as Terry says. If V2 is like this then VXII will be too, so I assume VT and VX are as well as Dr Terry says.

If the GMH dealership will make the changes to the locks without any cost, or at a reasonable rate, then that is good. If not then it strengthens the case for Aftermarket people, such as licensed workshops, to be able to access the right equipment and information.

Do you know why (besides cost cutting) that the early commercials had no driver door lock? I've always been curious about that.

I really have no idea, but I've heard that it may have been a Govt. road rule relating to entering the car from the driver's side.

Anyone else have any thoughts ?

You will notice in the real old movies that they enter the car from the footpath and slide across in many cases.

But that then goes against holding the door for the wife and letting her in first.

Need some real old people to ask?

In the days of bench seats & small transmission tunnels, it was suitable, and would make sense from a safety standpoint.
Closed-body Chevs from the 20s & early 30s are like that too, except it works well for converted cars (and many more have had American handles & locks fitted to the RHF door).

But with the evolution to bucket seats, consoles, and today's huge tunnels it's impossible, so it's probably more to do with practicality in the last 3-4 decades.
Cheers,

Mick

I have a 49 Chev pick up (Aussie Assembled) and it only has the passenger lock and was told the same thing by somebody in the last 12 months that it was the road rules to enter via passenger door.

Just went and checked Dads old Pilot House Fargo Ute. Only a lock on the passengers side. They were built between 48 and mid 50’s.
I have a International C1500. It’s only got a lock on the passengers side too. It’s built in the early 70’s though.
