They are all different diameters, lengths, colours and unis. You need a HQ 350 sedan or coupe tailshaft. There should be around 1000 of them out there to find!

This table may help you.A HJ/Z V8 Auto (turbo 400) maybe your closest to the Hq 350 tailshaft.I have never seen a genuine one for sale to fit a coupe , a few statesman one's which you maybe able to shorten.

Hi , Are you sure the diff is original ? , as flange size should be about 88mm to fit a uni joint of 84mm ( measuring on car not easy!) Thanks Mark.

HJ to earlier HZ sedan and coupe 308 auto (TH400) does go close but diameter is smaller and the rear uni is the standard V8 size. All TH400 yokes use the bigger 1.125” uni so the front one is the same as a HQ350. As already stated you could shorten a Statesman with 350 shaft but not sure if the shaft looks the same as a sedan/coupe one. Best bet is to find an original HQ 350 sedan or coupe tailshaft or find one to copy- you will find the ends on a tonner shaft or on the gearbox end of any car with a TH400 which includes early VB Commodore 5.0L auto.

No not sure if correct as the car has a full racing career right back to 1971. Anything could have happen and was likely replaced over time.
Car is deep in storage so that'll be something I'll have to check later. Its definitely LSD.

When you say flange size, are you referring to greatest distance across where the uni joint would sit. Just making sure.

Does anyone know why there is an inspection cover in the boot for a HQ? Presumably for the diff?

I think some early HQ had this. Others will expand hopefully. Possibly for the fuel sender?

This hole is mystery that has been argued (discussed) on heaps of forum's.

Only Sydney early built HQ's had them.

Our 6/71 Sydney built HQ does not have the hole but later ones do then they stop .

Thought's are the was an issue with access to whatever then this was resolved.

Also holes were cut after the body was built and cover is firewall heater blank off plate.

Heater plate is from a HT-G and out of interest what day/month was your HQ built?

Ours was 24/6/71.

Thanks for that, mine was built 21st Sept 71, Pagewood car obviously. It was first registered in New Zealand Oct 71 but oddly doesn't show as an export car. Potentially may have been special order.

I have a stick that just needs bending to correct position and I have a mate with an original stick to copy but I don't have the knob and wonder if there is a repro one out there either from US or here.

The Muncie gear knob is 2819975, while the Aussie 4-speed knobs are 2817736 & 2817737 for floor shift & console shift respectively. The Aussie gear knobs have a locking nut as well, which the Muncie section doesn't list.
