Hi i am wanting to convert my HK monaro into a 4 speed. I have a few toploaders laying around and was hoping people can tell me what speed humps they came across when doing the conversion. What was the best bellhousing used ie. Dellow or caslemaine rod shop or anything else. I'm wanting to use an 11" clutch. If you needed to cut or hack into the main support bar in the hump or cut a hole to make the shifter suit. Please any information or advice will help thanks in advance.

Someone had unfortunately converted my red GTS327 to a toploader. They'd put a XW GT toploader and 9" into it, probably came from the same car (still have the 9"). When I got the car the toploader went into the scrap bin. What was done to it was:

Main body member that supports the front of the seats and the gearbox crossmember had been badly butchered, totally illegal and bodgy.
They'd cut the factory shifter blister in half long ways and moved the LH half over.
Bashed the floor where the Saginaw shift rod humps went.
Stuck 25mm spacers under the 327's gearbox crossmember.

Made a mess of it. Will take a lot of time to fix it. I wouldn't do it, my mate had a toploader conversion in his 350 powered HK, kept smashing them and it only had about 425hp. I think he broke 3-4 of them before he got sick of it and put a Muncie back in. The Muncie fits far better, and will work without killing the floor pan's structural integrity. It'll work with a normal Chevy 11" clutch, flywheel and factory bellhousing. You can get the right brackets for a hydraulic clutch nowadays too. Bellhousings are pretty cheap too:

Or buy a bulletproof one, this one even has the hydraulics and flywheel and a clutch:

The only reason that so many guys used Top Loaders for conversions behind GM V8s in Aust, was that they were relatively strong compared to most other 4-speeds of the day & most importantly they were far more common than Muncies.

Top Loaders were the chosen 4-sp box behind 6 & V8 in XR, XT, XW, XY, XA & early XB, as well most 6-cyl TC Cortina.

The Touring Car guys found the Top Loaders limits with many failures during the 70s. In the end Dick Johnson chose the Super T-10 for his XD/ XE Falcons. The Super T-10 in really a Muncie in disguise.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0
