Thinking about the column shift arrangement - you basically need some form of stepped gate with an additional 1 or 2 stops over an original 2 or 3 speed auto column shifter. There's also the spacing of these to consider, as the 4L60E has a significant distance between P & R, whilst 3-2-1 are quite close.
In your shoes, I would be doing the following: 1. Obtain the gearbox you're using for the conversion, and the shifter from the donor car (even if it's a linkage type floor shift and you don't like the appearance - read on). 2. Work out the leverage ratio required for a full sweep from P all the way to 1 - ie how far does it move end-to-end. 3. Work out the leverage that the EH column gives you from end-to-end. If it's the same distance - great. If it's shorter, then make a shorter end for the gearbox (so that reduced movement in the column gives you more at the box selector shaft). 4. Once you have these movements worked out, so the EH sweep matches the 4L60E sweep, then find where the detent (stepped) plate sits in the EH, and mark each position (PRNDL or PRND2L). 5. Using a blank steel plate, trace the EH one onto it, marking where P&L end up, and more importantly, where the pivot is.. 6. Find the detent plate in the donor shifter (this is why you need it) and mark the various PRND321 steps before disassembly, as well as where the pivot sits - you can use a grinder to pull it apart as you won't need it again. 7. Lay the donor detent plate over the new tracing on the blank plate - aligning the pivot points. The 2 scales may not align yet. 8. Lay a straight edge from the pivot through the EH's P, and the 4L60E's P, and draw a line. So the same for 1, and then all the steps between. 9. If the scales do line up, then great, but if they don't, then you'll need to scale the steps using those marks you made, and then cut them into the new plate. This will give the EH shifter the required number of detent steps for the 4L60E.
As far as the quadrant, keep the existing needle, and get a signwriter to cut you up some small stick on numbers, or a whole sticker, to apply to it. You can light this up with an LED if needed.
For the P/N safety switch, and reverse, have a look at what the column-shift VS utes did with their column & wiring. Actually, you may be able to get a VS ute column and avoid all the work I noted above, as it's set up for a 4L60E already, and knowing how little Holden changed columns over the years, some of the parts are likely to fit straight on to your column. The only downside is they have an ugly shift linkage arrangement that goes up & over the trans tunnel (across the firewall) but you may be able to replace just this section with a cable to make it neater. |
