Terry, Warren, others?

Saw an original stamped J72 cast 4 speed pattern 308 today, with the engine number 308N351xS.

Ive heard of 186NxxxxS before and assumed it was a Nasco replacement 186S but the 308 number may now throw a spanner into this. Dr Terry and I talked about this a while back and assumed the above number might be a Nasco 186S, and surmised that others might be 161Nxxxx (no need for L or H as difference is in head), 186NxxxxL, 186xxxxP, 253xxxxL and 253xxxxH. The 308NxxxxS sort of muddies this a lot. Suggestions??

Obviously the 308 is a Nasco engine for a HT/G, but what does the S mean? Short? When I got told about it I assumed it was a 5 not an S but it's definitely an S. Could it mean South Africa?

It makes sense that Holden would have supplied a 308 in 1972 for a HT/G using a 1972 cast block. What would they have done for a 186? Would they have stockpiled them or built one using a 202 block with a 173 crank?

If we all had the same (good) taste, who would buy all the Fords?
