I’ve got to replace the steering box in my HG and have the option of a 16.1 or standard 20.1 steering box Is it worth putting the 16.1 in or is the standard box nicer to live with? Cheers

Living in suburban Sydney, I find the 20:1 box much easier to live with, because of all of the roundabouts & parking etc.
However if you live in a country area with plenty of open road driving you might prefer the more direct feel of the 16:1 box.
The downside of the 16:1 box is the extra effort required to turn the steering wheel, especially if you have wider wheel rims with low profile radial tyres fitted.

Terry, don't forget the sports steering wheel as well.
My brother had the big tyres and small steering wheel on his HG GTS and it was a pig to drive at slow speeds and parking.

Agree above comments. I have 16.1 and standard steering wheel size and love it. But I live semi rural and if I let tyre pressures slip down I can feel it parking.

The fast ratio steering box that was standard in GTS or when power steering was fitted was actually 16.7:1 |

Yes it was 16.7:1.
Over the years we've rebuilt many of these boxes & at customer's request have fitted 20:1 gears into a 16:1 stamped case, so onlookers wouldn't pick it being incorrect for a GTS.
So if you really want the quicker (but heavier) box, don't just rely on the stamped numbers on the case. Check the number of turns lock to lock.
