Which harness? Which gearbox?

What I mean is the dash harness or the engine harness? Manual and auto differ in the dash harness, plus anything with a sports dash will have ammeter wiring.

As HK1837 has said the harness is not just one piece, it is made in sections. I assume we talking HQ/HJ here.

AFAIK I know there is only one type of rear harness, although there will be variations for wagon, Statesman & ute/van. There will be 2 dash harnesses (manual & auto) & at least 3 engine harness (6, 253/308 & Chev350).

There are 2 front panel harnesses (single & dual headlights).

What do you need to know & what model series are we talking about ?

Dr Terry.

I presume Garry is asking about an engine harness for an engine swap? They are not the same. Wires to such things as the temp and oil sender, coil, vary in length due to there different locations on 6 v v8. These of course can be adapted by shortening/lengthening as appropriate.

As Sandaro has said the 6 & V8 engine harnesses are different mainly in their length.

There are not that many wires.

From memory:

Dark blue - Oil pressure
Dark green - Water temperature
Brown - Alternator light
Yellow - Ignition +ve (Coil)
Purple - Starter solenoid
Thick red - Main battery +ve

A few extras that aren't present on all cars:
Pink - Heater fan
Tan - Brake differential switch (1971 cars)
Dk green & Lt green - Reverse switch for 4-speed manuals
Extra thick red - Power windows

Also the wiring will vary slightly if you have a sports instrument cluster, for the ammeter, plus the extra brown for the tacho (Coil -ve)

Using some patience you can extend the wiring by soldering & using heat shrink tubing.
