Royal Umber was an EH colour. Didn't look too bad on an EH, but on an HQ, Yuk !

I agree some colours just look crap on some cars and some can just make the car.
What looks like crap on a HQ Kingswood may look ok on a Statesman, dude that owned them were totally one colour roof and all with tined window.

Dark colours on small cars are not the go mainly but large cars dark colours can be better in general.

I nearly bought a Blackwatch green HG GTS Monaro with black stripes, I liked it.
I had a HG Premier electra blue with white roof.
Sliver mink is a nice colour my sister had that HK Premier with white roof one.

Purr-pull HQ GTS with white stripes look good because it really stands out like but not all just Purr-pull would not and if you did a Torana GTR like that with white, it would just not cut it but somehow the LJ GTR XU-1 does look good in that pink, but I don't know why, could you get away with that on a HQ no way!

I know of a fellow who ordered a stike me pink HQ as he liked the colour when he saw it on a Torana. A few days later he saw a HQ in Strike me pink and raced straight down to the dealer and cancelled the order.

There was a very unique HK ute at the All Holden Day a Windsor yesterday.

It was a Kingswood ute with a 307 Saginaw 4-sp with a Salisbury diff, bucket seats & no console. It had the Saginaw front floor pressing & the boot floor with the Salisbury hump.

It was claimed by the dealer (Vic country) to be the only HK ute of its type. This of course is only anecdotal & may only apply to Dandenong built cars.

I knew of a similarly equipped HK Kingwood ute in Sydney during the 80s, maybe it was a Pagewood build.

Saginaw utes & van seem to be more commonplace in HT series.

I like the "the dealer told me they only made X"

How would the dealer know this?

They would have to contact Holden at the end of the model run to find out how many were made, then contact the owner and tell them, probably months after they purchased the car?

Why would they?

If they did would they do this with all the cars they sold?

Would Holden supply that info to a dealer?

If so how long would it take?

If the owner happened to ask the question, when bringing the car in for service, would the dealer actually find out or just B/S them?

Yes I love it when someone says "the dealer told me they only made X of this combination".

Rant over.

I wonder where the A75 option (column shift, bench front seat) WB Statesman fits into this. I have seen about a dozen for sale over the last 9 years with this option, including the one I own. I suppose that fleet buyers, large families (in the days before people movers like Tarago became popular) and funeral homes would have bought quite a few of them. In context of WB production it's a rare option but I guess when compared to some of the cars mentioned above, not all that rare?

Yeah, as I mentioned back in Post # 26 the SCC fleet in Sydney had quite a few 186 HT Saginaws painted in their fleet green colour.

People in the country soon worked out that the 6-cyl M22 combination was a good workhorse. So by HT they were relatively commonplace.

It pretty much was gone in HG though, the ability to option 4spd on 6cyl commercial disappears from the HG order form.

I agree Warren. It's all hearsay. In most cases the dealer was just "big-noting' by saying that this one customer ordered this special build. To the dealer it was special because it was 'special' to him & also the extra work & time to get the order complete. The zone office would've told him things like "it takes extra work to fit the different floorpans for the Saginaw & Salisbury", they don't build many of these.

How the zone would know how many of each combination was built is anyone's guess. Even if the Vic zone office kept exact records of this stuff, how would they know how many were built at Elizabeth or Pagewood or where ever.

Just another case of Chinese whispers I bet. Dealer probably said it was the only one they’d sold and over time it becomes the only one sold.

A dealer actually ordering a car compared to just selling from their stock, selling from stock order vehicles or selling unallocated vehicles off the schedule (of vehicles being built or to be built) was also a fairly rare occurrence that they would probably mention something to the buyer. I imagine most 5litre manual HK commercials would be retail order, and most dealers would be lucky to have sold one vehicle. Even when I ordered my VY SS ute, they tried to sell me a red auto dealer stock cheap, then tried to sell me a normal white manual SS off the schedule or from dealer swap. But I insisted upon black leather so it had to be a retail order and it took about 3-4 months to actually have it delivered. So imagine 1969, walking into a dealer wanting a V8 manual HK Kingswood Ute with A50 buckets, sports dash in Silver Mink with red trim. Grumble Grumble, what about a V8 auto in white with blue bench seat, you can have it this week.

Strangely enough, the Brock Magnum ute has this combination in it. I guess that’s what the owner wanted put in it. I always thought it was the worst possible interior you could have picked to put in it and gear shift you could have chosen for supposedly a sporty Brock ute.

It was originally a 6cyl though wasn’t it? It was probably originally a 6cyl auto which would be standard with bench seat and column shift. Was it a Kingswood or Holden ute?

It was a 6 banger. Not sure on transmission etc. I just couldn’t believe it had a column shift Statesman interior!

The Brock Magnum ute, doesn't really cut it as a one-off or rare Holden. It was built/converted by HDT post production. It's not the same car that left the assembly line.
