Probably a question for Mick.

What is different on one of these compared to a normal 179kW version? Friend just bought one cheap as it had no spark, really good car apart from faded paint. I know the engine prefix is different due to valve springs from memory. Is anything else different on the car? It appears to have some sort of headers too.

I had a 1998 VSIII Stato HBD 185kw
Cold air intake, factory headers, complete HBD s/steel exhaust (only sold the car 3 years ago still factory system, mufflers stamped HSV)
That's all l know about the motor (power chipped it)
The 195kw maybe roller lifters?? As some of the last VSIII utes had this motor

All VT were roller cam and sequential injection. I think they had a knock sensor too maybe? The 195kW in VT was the roller cam and sequential equivalent of your 185kW, but I was wondering how the whole car not just the engine differed if at all. Plus the 195i wasn’t just the Memcsl, knock sensor, cold air and exhaust I think like the prior VN/P/Q 180kW and VR/S 185kW. The 195i in a VT also got a different engine number prefix too unlike the earlier HSV enhanced or HBD stuff, so it was a different engine. I think it was valve springs maybe?

The valve springs (and the machining of the pads) is what draws the different prefix. I didn't think the HBD cars got any internal engine work done - it was all applied externally, like the earlier cars, so check the prefix, and it should be the same as a 179kw standard 5L.

The sequential injected EFI 5L didn't need all the cold air, memcal, headers & exhaust of the earlier 180/185 upgrades, because it already had the knock sensor, and I haven't seen any difference in the VT HBD airbox.
Also of not is that all VS2/3 V8s got the HSV intake and top lid on the airbox anyway, so that was dropped from the 185 package in VS2.

I still have my VS2 HSV enhanced 5L. The exhaust that crowe mentioned definitely is S/S. It's been off the car and has sat in the yard for over 15 years, exposed to the elements, and there's not a spot of rust on it.
There were variants of this exhaust system though - single & dual cat versions, and round or trapezoid canisters for the rear, depending on the spec and luxury level.

The Sequential 195KW has a bigger cam than the 179KW and a exhaust valve that is different in that the stem is thinner at where it enters into the port to the head giving better flow and stronger springs and that's why he different Prefix.

As for the Ute and Statesman of the 195KW they have only one cat and the same exhaust as the old 185KW and the VT 195 has dual cats and better dual exhaust.

The 195KW has the same cam and exhaust valve as the Holden 5.7L.

The chip is different as to the 179kw and 195kw and also the Ute and Statesman chip is different to the VT because the exhaust on the VT flows better.

All Sequential 179 and 195 got the knock sensor, only the old V8 5.0L 180KW and 185KW got a knock sensor.

The 1998 standard VS V8 ute and Statesman had a 168KW ADR up grade ? it was just like the 165KW but as it got a air snorkel just like the Sequential 179KW in the ute and Statesman. but a dude that I know said that his 168KW ute did not perform as well as his 165KW ute he had before it but said that his 179KW ute went better than both. even tho I will have to point out that the 179KW ute and Statesman did not perform as well as the 179WK VT did because the VT had a much better flowing Dual exhaust with Dual cats, so in reality the VS 179KW could not be truly 179KW at all.

The 195KW Maloo Ute has a better quality air snorkel especially at the mouth but it looks much the same tho.

This one has a VN prefix engine with red rocker covers, extractors and has XX3 on the HBD plate. It has its original delivery books from Suttons City Motors from June 1998 with the VN6600xx engine number. It also has a HBD build number of SDT1251.
