My Brother in law has decided to go with the 304 5 speed for his HX Tonner so we pulled the engine he has down not sure what year he was told its VS SS casting date is 21E1 and engine number is VU605### if someone can translate this for me please. pistons size was 101.6mm which tells me standard bore but i have no idea on crank journal sizes. big end is 53.95mm and main is 61.95mm is this standard im guessing it is as the bore is standard. Also what is the little guage looking thing screwed into the block.
Where can i get a harness kit to make this work in a HX i have the harness already and will i need a commodore fuse box that fits in engine bay.

The date works out to 21st of May 1991 i would guess, which is a little early for VS i think, its more like VN,VP era. The VU prefix was used on VN to VT standard 5.0L V8's and some HSV i believe. I think the gauge on the block your talking about is the

VUxxxxx is VN to mid VSIII. VT and late VSIII are a different prefix. Bearings will say what size they are on the back ie STD, 001, 010 etc. Guage may be a knock sensor. Is it in the hole on the side of the block? Try Castle Auto Electrics for conversion

That number sequence is firmly in VN territory, which kicked off around 20-30,000 numbers prior, so definately lining up with the 1991 casting date.
