Hi,

First time poster.

Just picked up a 71 HG premier 253 matching numbers and was interested to find out it had electric windows. I have not seen another premier with these fitted.

Anyone else seen them?

Going to be a big project so will be plenty of questions.

Cheers Tim

I saw lots of HK Premier and Brougham with power windows back when they were still in wrecking yards in the 90’s. I used to raid them for interior bits for my GTS’s. Found a few HK Kingswoods with power windows too. I never really took a lot of notice of HT or HG unless they were coupes (which didn’t have power windows) or had SBC’s in them. I did get some bits off HT Kingswoods like power steering or Consoles, Saginaw 4spds, 308 engines etc. but I never saw power windows other than the odd Brougham. They do exist though which you’ve found out.
Having said that I did go to look at a HG Premier sedan once for parts that was a 308 with 3.36 Salisbury that I think may have had power windows but I can’t remember for certain. It was a light metallic green all over with from memory column auto and bench seat. Walked away from it at $1000, but in the 90’s that was all that a 308 HG Premier was worth for parts. All I would have kept was the diff, the 308, tailshaft and the tank with floor cut. The rest was really worthless to a HK enthusiast, probably would have gone to a demo derby driver to put a 6cyl and banjo back in. How things have changed since then!

1981, I bought a HG prem from Goulding motors in Boggabri for $200. Metallic green with tan vinyl roof, & electric windows. It wasn't a bad car, but it sat around while I worked away & after a while a mate in Mt Druitt was looking for a 308 block, so I stripped it out & gave most of the car away. I got the heads & inlet match ported & new valves etc, to put on my HZ van. I wasn't impressed when I went to fit the heads & worked out the cast was different for the alternator bracket. Still got sump & pickup, Trimatic, shifter, console & tailshaft.
Pity, would be a nice car now

Did you say you still have the Trimatic console?
I am still searching for one of those for my HK for the TH350.

Not unusual for a HG premier to have electric windows, especially late HG’s built in the last couple of months before HQ’s were released. Lots of 253/308 HG prems built in June/July 71 we’re fully loaded with reclining buckets, t-bar auto, fast glass, power steer, 6 inch rims, sports hubcaps, electric rear quarter arial, air con etc. Holden trying to move stock before it became redundant I guess.

There would be some of that, but remember GMH would’nt have huge amounts of excess stuff. Everything was procured once the vehicles went into the schedule. There were some exceptions of course being stuff imported from the USA where parts for production were predicted rather than based upon the actual schedule. We saw this with 307 and auto left at the end of HK that was ordered for predicted Brougham and probably V8 Monaro that didn’t get built. There is the possibility I guess that some of the imported steer (and to a lesser extent A/C components) were left near the end of HG. However I have a lot of internal memos to dealers from early 1971 that deal mainly with lack of availability of options rather than an excess. GMH push hard in those memos to get as many XU3 orders as possible to use up an excess of neutral headlining, but do also say that stuff like M21 is virtually gone and NLA outside of GTS. Some trims are listed as NLA too.
My guess is if there is a glut of higher spec HG near the end it is more likely to be to entice people to buy them rather than wait for HQ. I haven’t seen much in the way of special pricing at that time though.

Yes your right there. There was a lot excitement about the release of the HQ prior which would of made it difficult to move the last of the HG’s.
I remember seeing my 1st HQ in a Holden dealership when passing through Nowra and thought WOW.
We then bought a gold with white roof August 71 HQ V8 kingswood wagon optioned up with sports rims dash, radio, dual exhaust and one of those rectangle chrome roof racks. I am reasonably sure we also had to option the head rest as they weren’t standard at the time. It was the envy of the neighbourhood at the time.
Ended up with a cracked block when 1 year old and out of warranty. Took 10 hours to drive back to Sydney from Jindabyne. Must of topped up the radiator 20 times on that trip back. Replaced the block and drove it until 1983 when a p plater t boned us at an intersection.
Good times back then when a new Holden was a big deal.
