5.0L from a Pagewood assembled car. Almost certainly any HT apart from Brougham, slight chance of very late HK. Not certain of the changeover point. Edit - just asked Ben. He can't make a call, too close to the changeover point of HK to HT. It could be a final HK engine or a very early HT engine. It is an auto engine too which makes it harder. It is slightly too early for his HT GTS which is a single digit HT V8 GTS from Pagewood, but there would have been dozens of 307 auto HT built prior to it, many built during the final days of HK assembly at Pagewood. thanks hk1837 appreciate the info. I was told it was from a HK Brougham South African, which I doubted but had no proof. From your previous posts am I right by saying 307 - motor the 1 means sydney,7557 is the built number, and K is McKinnon industries, and 0516 is may 16th. where on the block is the year stamp.

Unlikely to from a South African car unless it was assembled here and sent over as a car, even then most South African stuff came from down South.
307 means 307. 17757 is just a number in the Pagewood sequence which started at 10000 for any V8 imported engines installed into cars from the start of HK, so will be 307, 327 or 350. It reset after the end of HG.
K is McKinnon Industries at this time, it became General Motors of Canada Limited, St Catharine’s during 1969.
The year will be 1968 as it is a 1968 engine which ceased production at the end of July 1968. On a McKinnon engine it is on the side, the leading digit for an 0516 will normally be an 8 followed by a letter then a number, although I have an 0516 here cast in 1967, so sat around for up to 6 months before assembly in May 1968 and then used in a HK around March-April 1969. |

1969 engines have different blocks, heads, rocker covers, intakes etc. 1969 started on 1st September 1968. GM built 1968 engines up until the end of July ‘68 so ‘68 model vehicles could be assembled in August. Plants retooled during August and started making gear for 1969 models like pressing panels, making engines etc so 1969 vehicles could be built starting 1/9/68. The wash up is say a ‘68 Camaro can be built anywhere from 1/9/67 to 31/8/68. This 1968 to 1969 year engine transition along with other local factors is what caught GMH out with 327 engines for HK. GMH had more than enough 307 ordered and made prior to the end of July 1968 to see HK out, and the same for 1968 327 engines for the CKD full size cars (Impala and Parisienne). They thought they had enough 327 for HK too with the last being made in the middle of July 1968 in New York State. However the decision to run the factory team cars in the 500 didn’t occur until July and the ARDC had a differing interpretation of the Series Production eligibility. So GMH had to add a lot more GTS327 to the schedule, which dealers saw and sold off the schedule meaning they were going to run out of engines in December 1968 rather than having enough to see HK out. The big problem was the last 4 barrel 327 was made in July 1968, plus 1969 model engines were very different in many areas. All that was left 327 wise were two 2 barrel engines (210hp and 235hp) both with 1969 heads, rocker covers, intake, long water pump, relocated alternator. McKinnon had to specially build them for GMH, had to use parts from Tonawanda (4BBL intake and one exhaust manifold) to make it. The end result a large amount of frigging around with special parts to make it work. The end result of adding those extra GTS327 into the schedule? Cars had to get pushed out the back end of HK production, the bulk being cars not selling well being Brougham and V8 Monaro. Which was a large part of why there were so many 307 auto power trains left at the end of HK that had to be used in HT. Edited by user Saturday, 29 August 2020 4:06:12 PM(UTC)
