Same as Holden engines, after assembly and run (on gas) with timing set and marked. Can’t remember if painted first or stamped after paint. Holden blue and black engines (cannot remember with earlier Red but assume the same) were stamped before painting...

They used a 'mask bar' that went over the numbers and the water hose connections to ensure those areas didnt get any paint. This is the only photo I have of it but I've seen one other. Dr Terry Yeah its a BB but I guess a SB would have been painted the same way. Its a black and white photo and someone added the orange colour to it just to highlite that masking bar thing.
