Hi brains trust. Im looking at getting myself a 2015 VF redline, and was just wondering about the brakes. Seems the VF1 had silver brembo calipers on the front and standard single piston brakes on the back.. Just wondering is it worth upgrading to VF2 level and getting brembos all round? And if I did that, would I need to replace the front calipers or are the silver and red brembos the same? Cheers.

When they went to Brembo front and rear they used different wheels front and back from memory. On the earlier ones they were only front and all wheels were the same. |

Ah thanks Byron. Yeah from what Ive heard the Brembos are the same between silver and red. But yes on the redline the front wheels are I think 8.5 wide and the backs are 9.5.

All the Redlines had staggered wheels in 19 inch or optional 20 inch. The VF brakes were silver, VF2 red and the Motorsport edition went back to silver. The Motorsport also had light weight two piece drilled front rotors and drilled rear rotors. Tests in the US on the equivalent Chevrolet SS models actually showed that the original VF without rear Brembos had a shorter stopping distance. My mate had the VF SS-V ute with 375kw kit and had the up graded front brakes, but they were only crap single piston calliper piston that the Cops got in the USA type. I said they were rubbish and he barked on that they were the bees knees, a bigger rotor I believe as well, but he found out that they were crap for that amount of power and the what he drove, that is totally mental and it was to much power for him to truly handle, you make a mistake with such as that power and you are in trouble on the roads about where we would go. so he would not drive on some roads in fear and would not drive on a dirt road at all in it. he is a good driver but not that good. not to many people can handle a car with that much power on the road with what can come up, or hammering full on for an hour or two. He needed the full on brake job up grade with that power and how he drove. I don't think he could up grate his front brake pads on that police pack rubbish. So as to you and your car it's up to you what you think you need. I was just only going to up rate my VF SS brake pads from standard and toss the std shocks and that would of done me, but I kept my old SS as I liked it better than the VF. As to the Brembo etc big type brakes I think they are overkill for most people and they cost way to much. it's just for pose value 90% of the time.

I remember when I looked at a VF there was a front brake upgrade you could get on an SS or SS-V that was the same front brakes as a Police spec vehicle, it was only a few hundred $. Then there was the Redline upgrade that got you bigger Brembo front brakes. |

I've had 2 SS-V VEs, a VF SS-V and I currently have a series 1 VF SS-V Redline. (all wagons and all the 6.0l) There is absolutely no comparison between them as far as the brakes go, the Brembos saved my life in a near miss that would have been a head on at over 100kph if I was in the other cars. There was what admittedly was a promo video on youtube I think it was Skaife doin a test drive in a redline ute if you do some searching.
Main downside is my car has the chrome finish wheels and the standard brembo pads eat the disks and make a lot of black dust on the rims. I changed the rotors and tried a few different pad compounds when I got sick of cleaning the wheels. The brake performance dropped away a little but is still much better than the standard SS-V. Definitely not just pose value, probably the best thing about the Redline. I have wondered about the the rears on the series 2 but the fronts do most of the work so I wouldn't expect too much more from them. The 6.2l and bimodal exhaust on the series 2 is the main improvement in my book.
The series 1 has the staggered rims and the back 275 30 series tyres are a bit exy but do help cornering a fair bit.
