Looking at a HJ coupe where build date is 9/75 but VIN plate has a F meaning 1976. Is this anything to worry about? Also I know the chassis no. doesn’t match its a hx chassis no. Must mean the chassis belonged to HX LE originally??!! Steer clear?

A 9/75 complianced HJ is a 1976 year model. The letter code in the VIN is representative of the model year, not calendar year.
The HX chassis could be from any passenger HX Holden or Statesman. Meaning it could be from a HX Belmont sedan or wagon, HX Kingswood sedan or wagon, HX GTS, HX LE, HX Premier sedan or wagon, HX Deville or HX Caprice. The HX Premier, Statesman and Wagon chassis use an extra rubber mount per side but I can’t remember if the chassis has the holes there anyway regardless. |

Thanks for the reply, no massive dramas then as I know its not matching numbers, only other thing is the body tag is missing. The VIN indicates it is indeed a 308 GTS coupe Sydney build, am I snookered for finding out what original running gear, paint, trim, options were? HHS are reluctant to disclose without that third tag which I understand (re-birth cars)

You cannot tell from the remaining HJ records what the colour and trim were, only what it was mechanically. The only place the colour and trim can be found today are on the BODY tag or in the original Owner Guide. The GMH mainframe records (Vehicle Master Listing) that contained the data originally are not known to exist anymore, all that remains is a small subset of it as a Service/Warranty Report that was printed out in the 70's on tractor feed paper and microfiched also in the 70's. Being a Service/Warranty report all it contains is limited mechanical information.
If it was a 5.0L it will be L31 M21 GV4 or L31 M41 GU7.
Not that it really matters anymore as it has lost its original chassis, original BODY tag and by the sounds the original engine. Best bet is to build a modified out of it, being a HJ there is little drama fitting a SBC or even a 454, but you'd probably have to put a HJ chassis back in it as it would be seen and registered as a HX with a HX chassis. Or wreck it and use it to restore a more original car, Good glass, stainless, quarter panels, doors and seats are normally worth more than a whole ratty car.
All HJ coupe were Pagewood (Sydney) built.
Post up its PSN and I'll see if I have come across it before. There were only 606 HJ GTS coupe made, with 5.0L being the most common (393). |

H864950 is the PSN. It was originally an internal GMH vehicle. Smitty here might be able to help you on which dept it was attributed to, credited selling dealer was 217. It was an auto car. |

Which means WA Press Fleet. I just checked up a few known WA Press Fleet cars and they were 217 as well. Not entirely sure why GMH added a HJ GTS 5.0L auto coupe to the Press Fleet in August 1975, they would be lucky to have made another 20 cars after then and sold stuff all in WA. In any case you might be in luck, go looking for WA Newspaper or Magazine articles from maybe November 1975 onwards and see if any of them test a HJ GTS coupe. Point being the article if it exists might tell you what colour and trim colour it was. Edited by user Saturday, 13 November 2021 7:18:57 PM(UTC)
