Hello, yesterday the engine started to over heat and also warnings to check powertrain. I kept resting the vehicle on the side of the road to allow the engine to cool and get it home. I am in a small town with the local mechanic away over the holidays and have never topped up the coolant myself before. I am hoping the problem is just to do with the coolant and not major repairs. I noticed two types of coolant, one green and the other a reddish colour and not sure what to use. I have a Holden Commodore VY Executive, automatic. Would be at least 10 years old. Would be grateful for some advice, for which coolant to use or what else the problem may be.

If your VY has the 3.8 V6 then use the green GM coolant, I think it's branded AC Delco All Seasons.
The red AC Delco 'Dexcool' is for aluminium alloy motors like the LS V8s & Alloytecv6s.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0 |

MY VS V6 had a bleeder valve above the top cover the hose goes into on the engine, I would say the V6 VY has the same. you just top up the point with water at least if she needs. to get you by.
