Was the side-sill Jack an accessory or option for the HK. In the owners manual on page 42-3 in the tyre change procedure section both the under axle and the side - sill style were mentioned, including mention of the spherical seat provided to position the side-sill Jack. Or was it another thing that was to be but never was. aKbud

I think the sedans, wagons & coupes got the side (scissor) jack while the utes & vans got the bottle jack.

Thanks Dr Terry. I would have thought it would been the other way around with the commercials got scissor Jack and sedan, wagon and coupes got the under axle 3 stage windup one. Only place I’ve ever seen a scissor Jack was behind the seat in a Ute or van. Unless of course it just thrown in the boot. It seams Clyde-Apec made a lot of Jacks mand for most car makers. designs change over time but there were a lot that looked very similar around the HK era. I have a 3 stage Jack that I thought may have been a HK Jack but looking closer it had Tonsley Park written on it. Do you think there may have times when one Jack was common to a number of cars. I just don’t remember comparing Jack styles in my HK and the mates Valiant. But now it seams the real enthusiast has to have the correct style and colour. On the matter of Jack makers Apec and later Clyde-Apec have an interesting history. AKabud

This is a great question "Jack". I have only every seen the bottle style type jacks, but the parts manual mentions the "handle only" for the under sill scissor jack handle to only suit body style 69 (sedans). Its item 8.820 and part number 7416590 as shown in the attached pic. As far as I am aware, all underbody crossmembers and pressings are the same across all models. Yes their are incremental differences but largely the same. The only dimple (indentation) that is visible on a HK is at the front crossmember just behind where the K Frame bolts in, just behind the bottom front guard bolts, see attached pics of monaro and panel van. All other crossmembers are smooth with no apparent provision for a ball type jack. I am not even sure if this indentation is for the jack? The jack shown in the attached pics looks the same as in the owners manual see pics If anyone can shed any light on this mystery it would be great.

My early HK Premier has the 'dimples' on the bottom of the sill like HR does, I was led to believe this was an early HK thing just like the grooves on the A pillars. My original jack is long gone, I've asked a couple of people whether it should have the scissor jack rather than the wind up one because of this and they just drew a blank. Unfortunately I never noticed. I cut up a few early HK sedans for rust repair sections for a pair of coupes and the jacks probably stayed in the boot when what was left went to the tip. I never really looked at the jacks or where they went. In my defence they were $250 cars, if they had good steel they became rust section donors, if they were rusty they became demo derby hacks! |
