Hi,

Trying to indentify the head that is on my 1966 Hr, block is a 186 but i have been told the head is off a 202.
ID numbers read as; 2811930 J182 12 L
Realy just trying to work out what spark plugs i should be running

The head is for most displacement HQ era red 6's. Suits 202 high comp, 173 low comp and I think it may also have been used on low comp 138 as well. High comp 173, XU1 and I think high comp 138 use different heads. Outside HQ would have been used on later HG, HJ, LJ, LH, early LX, CF Bedford and a few others

You need HQ type plugs with the short thread & tapered seat. BP5FS in NGK.

The 173 high compression head is a "H" the low cop 173 is a "L" head.

XU-1 head is it's own PN. do not have a L or H cast on them that I have seen but are all small chamber.

I would think that the 138 red High is a "H" and the low a "L".

The 202 has a low compression piston and a high comp piston, but the 173 and 138 red do not have high or low comp pistons.

H and L only applies to displacements 173 and below (although not quote clear on 138).

XU1 head was basically a modified 161H head and then later on once the 161 and 186 heads were finished GMH specially cast heads for XU1 engines.

173, 186 and 202 low comp had dished pistons for the low comp engine (202 had a bigger dish as the high comp 202 already had small dish). 173 low comp definitely used a different piston to the high comp. A standard 173 bottom end with a 202 head was too high in compression for standard fuel, so they had to dish the piston. I think only 149 and 161 were the same bottom end for low and high comp engines (again not sure about 138).
