As the Elizabeth records have been lost, the total HQ 15% retail order chance + the even less chance to be able to order a CTV V8 M20 Belmont vehicle, then it would make sense to me to place more onus on the stamped Adelaide tags as a possibilty to aid with identification. Like you said, the HQ Belmont tag would be blank if the XX7 package had not been applied?

The Body inspection of an Elizabeth built HQ requires the following checks from my understanding beyond what the body tag tells you to POSSIBLY identify a Sandman.

Fluted guards
sports steering wheel
Rally wheels
U21 Dash
Console and appropriate shifter
Console bracket
The 2 sheetmetal holes FWD of the shifter to secure the console ect ect

Anyone can apply these items to a HQ Belmont if you know what your doing but unfortunately if you don't have the information correctly placed on the tags then its all for nothing.

So why isn't the M20 application to the body tag used as another indicator for Metallic paint, correct trim, 80270 Elizabeth built vehicles?

It doesn't really matter if the tag is Elizabeth or not - most HQ Sandman van body tags are Elizabeth as that BAP built all the bodies apart from Acacia Ridge bodies and early HQ Sandman van bodies that Pagewood did. The fact remains it makes no difference as you can only tell if a vehicle isn't a Sandman from the BODy ID tag, not of it is. The only reason I know that was an Elizabeth assembled vehicle was I already had it recorded along with its other tags. If I only saw that tag there is no way for me to know if it was an Elizabeth, Pagewood or Dandenong assembled vehicle.

Having access to the original PSN record can tell me if it is a Retail or Stock order, but not always. Retail order always are recorded as sold almost as soon as they are completed, whereas Stock order often has a month or three or more between - but not always. If a stock order vehicle is sold off the schedule then it is delivered pretty quickly after completion.

So in short HQ tags are essentially useless in Sandman identification - they are good in telling you not-a-Sandman though. The body is the best indicator. However if someone has stripped all the original paint off the tunnel and made it impossible to tell if the console mount is original or they've frigged with the shifter cutout (to disguise the extra bit in front of the shifter for the hockey stick) then my advice would be to walk away and not spend restoration $ on it. One day the original IBM Mainframe database of the vehicle Master Listing may possibly appear and it will detail EVERY bit of information that went onto every vehicle's broadcast sheet, so it will be easy to run a report pivoted/filtered off PSN and XX7 so then it will become obvious that some of these claimed HQ Sandmans will be proven to be just a standard V8 Belmont optioned with a 4spd and bucket seats - let's face it, that build spec is going to outnumber a HQ V8 XX7 by 10:1 or even 20:1 or more in the same timeframe. There is probably 20 dishonest people out there selling a "rare" Holden for every one honest one. Today "rare" appears next to Aussie 3spd gearboxes or a flogged out disc brake rotor!

Info doesn't exist, and given the ongoing behaviour by one foolish person in WA, the one person who may have been able to give some insight will no longer be providing any such information.
