Just bought an EL wagon (auto) and it's the first vehicle I've owned with all this electronic gadgetry so I'm a bit reticent about messing around under the bonnet without doing some research first and the first problem I've noticed is that the engine runs on when you take your foot off the throttle so you end up using the brakes alot more to stop yourself. Plus when you put it in gear the motor jumps from idle to about 1100rpm and tries to drive the car away. Once you stop and hold your foot on the brake for 5 secs. or so the motor will drop back to about 800rpm but that's still not idle and as soon as you touch the throttle again it jumps back to 1100rpm and won't drop below that till you stop for a few secs. With so many sensors and servos between my foot and the throttle body I wouldn't know where to start, or even if it's a problem or something that is built into the car . If it's a problem what could it be and if it's something that can be adjusted , where do I look and what do I adjust? Thanks in adavance for any light anyone can shed on this problem and any advice anyone can give me.

Try cleaning the stepper motor.

Thanks for the reply Brendon. This is going to sound like a dumb question but where do I find this stepper motor of which you speak and is it easy to get to?

It's on top throttle body. It's basically an electronic choke setup. They are renouned for getting dirty and giving erratic rpm.

I have an EL wagon with the same problem and I can tell you it's probably not the stepper motor. When I bought mine I had the ford dealer go over it with a fine tooth comb and the problem was eventually traced to the computer through a process of eliminat

For starters clean the throttle body with carby cleaner and restet the base idle.... if that doesnt work there is a track on the ECU that burns out and that creats the problem ... this burns out due to the stepper motor draws to many amps 1+ so you will p
