It is unusual as both HJ and HX Features Manuals and POA documents show only the Deville as a planned vehicle for sale in NZ. The Caprice is called a Chevrolet Caprice for South Africa and the HJ Deville is called a Chevrolet in Thailand.

However this one exists regardless of whether it was badged that way or not by GMH or GMNZ (Almost certainly changed probably when the SBC engine was fitted, the engine is a 1973 Tonawanda built 350 TH400 so it was never in a GMH product). It is amongst a whole bunch of HX's with the Trentham dealer code against them all in a row built mid HX in 10/76. They start at H902500 and end at H902358, 39 cars. They are:

1 x Belmont wagon
9 x Kingswood wagons
3 x Kingswood sedans
1 x Premier wagon
4 x Premier sedan
15 x Deville
6 x Caprice

What makes them interesting is:

Most of them are L31 M41 GU4 except for 7 of the 9 Kingswoood wagons and the 3 Kingswood sedans which are L32 M40, so that is 29 of the 39 as L31 M41.
All have power steering.
Only 3 of the 39 don't have integrated A/C, which are 1 x Kingswood wagon (an L31 car), the Premier wagon and a Deville.
They are all GU4 (3.08) rear axle with 8 of them LSD. 7 of the 15 Devilles are LSD and the 8th is the same L31 Belmont wagon than didn't have integrated A/C.

There are some pretty rare cars in there especially at that time in HX as 4.2 was standard with 3.55 and 3,36 was the economy option.

Would I be right to say Australian built and sold as a 308 t400, lots of changes made during the last 45 years including engine badges, colour and country!?

It has a Pagewood VIN and BODY plate so has to be Australian assembled. But it was built for sale and sold new into NZ and hence won't have an ADR plate.

How do we know it was destined for NZ? Is that evident from your records?

Is it unusual to have General Motors Holden on the tags? I know you have said statesman/caprice ditched the holden?

Because the records show it went new to Trentham NZ for sale in NZ, zone office code is export. Same as the other 38 cars all around it in a block of consecutive PSN's. GMH was the company that built it, that is why its on the tags. Holden was a car line during HJ era and Statesman wasn't part of it, but this one was never a Chevrolet, it was badged and sold as a Statesman Caprice - it still has that badge on it.

Thought I knew of a Statesman that could have been in that build , But on checking it is H912954 . It fitted the criteria as it was an HX Deville with A/C and GMNZ owned new . Very nice car in Jade Green with Black roof and still under 100,000km. Mark.

It is really strange , because looking at the GMNZ brochures , Belmont was not available in NZ HX car/ute or wagon. Caprice was not mentioned ether . Mark.

That is in another bunch of 21 consecutive PSN's of NZ exports. Similar mix of vehicles although there is two fully loaded GTS's in them rather than Premier sedans (L31 M41, 3.08 rear axle, LSD, air and steer). There is two Caprices in the 21. H912954 was also the ame driveline as the GTS's. There are 6cyl cars in the 21 too, the 2 x Belmont sedans are 2.85 3spd with front discs, some 3.3 auto Kingswood sedans with integrated A/C and two oddballs - 2 x Kingswood sedans with 3.3 4spd, 3.55 rear axle and integrated A/C. All of this would make you think NZ was a tropical climate!

Hence my very first statement in this thread! There was no Belmont ute in HX anywhere.

Thanks for the information, as it is really strange all these A/C cars , A/C in a Holden made by GMNZ was not an option until VB SLE and HZ Statesman. They must have been made for all those GMNZ managers. Mark.

None of these are GMNZ build, they are all Pagewood. They will be built here rather than CKD because they are higher spec.
