Intermittent Fuse Box Power Issue

Hi, I've just completed the installation of a 307 SBC to my HK Ute leaving it a 3 speed column shift manual(Was a 6 Cylinder)
I have power to the fuse box however every so often I loose power and dash blacks out
When power is available all instruments work as well as headlights, Blinkers etc with the exception of parking lights (which is another issue)
I'm thinking maybe Accelerator Linkage is pulling on wiring from the connection block but cant be sure
I've been inside and upside down so many times its becoming ridiculous
Any advise would be appreciated

The firewall junction block on HK/HT/HG was notorious for intermittent connections causing these problems. Just get it re-wired to eliminate those bad connectors.

Check the fuse and fuse holder for the taillights which also governs the dash and horn I believe. I once had the horn button shorting out that circuit, so maybe check that out too

Yes it has an amp meter looking at wiring some wires look to have become brittle and lost insulation I'm thinking I need a new under dash wiring loom - Looking on eBay there expensive but still cheaper than a burnt out Ute Maybe someone following this forum has one hidden away deep in there shed that might part with for a fair price

Trust me this is where your problem exists. These cars aren't like modern cars where wiring looms consist of dozens (sometimes 100s) of individual wires. The HK wiring by comparison is much simpler. From memory there are only around 8 or 10 wires at the firewall joiner. A few extra if you have a 4-sp & a deluxe heater, but it's quite simple. Anybody with a basic understanding of wiring could rewire it properly. Even if you had a pro do the job, it shouldn't cost a fortune. Find an older guy more experienced with old cars, he could do it with his eyes closed. Dr Terry |

UPDATE: was the firewall connector as suggested. I unplugged it and sprayed contacted cleaner inside both male and female sides, sprayed it in the back of each plug in the cab and engine bay, allowed to soak then did it again the following day. Then finally give the connector pins a gentle clean with a fine spark plug wire brush. Another quick spray with contact cleaner before plugging it back together and it has been zero issues since. Hi Geoff and all, Did the firewall connector end up being the issue? I have suddenly had a problem with my HK 168s GTS. I spend Sunday spraying everything I could see with contact cleaner and checking for loose connections. I then had power back yesterday, but when I went to check again today it’s dead. Guessing the contact cleaner may have helped bridge the issue somewhere temporarily. Pretty desperate to fix the issue quickly as every year I let the July rego run out (it’s too cold to want to drive in the dead of winter) and renew before the 3 month deadline in October. As I only just discovered I had an issue I’m on a short unplanned deadline to at least get a temporary fix. Thanks in advance. Edited by user Tuesday, 18 October 2022 8:16:08 PM(UTC)
