What are the options power wise? A dedicated battery back up for the GPS that charges off the main battery but can maintain power if the main battery is disconnected?
I see a lot of these units advertised as magnetic - I like the idea of not having to drill holes. Has anyone got experience on how strong they are and if they will stay in place while driving.
Thanks,

An Australian company called Digital Matter based in Perth make some of the best quality tracking units and they've also created a very good tracking platform/software called Telematics Guru, along with its mobile app.
Digital Matter dont sell to the public so you have to go through a service provider to buy their products and get access to Telematics Guru.
Theres a few different companies that sell the Digital Matter units and I bought mine and set up an account through a company called HomeOfIOT for $18/month per tracker.
Data use is unlimited and unlimited app notifications.
http://homeofiot.com.auYou can get battery powered 'Assett Trackers' or hard wired 'Vehicle Trackers'
Hard wired is always the best option for vehicles and they have an internal backup battery that goes for around 12-hours, or a lot more depending on use and settings.
You can setup ignition detection alerts, battery disconnection alerts, towing alerts, geofencing alerts, speed alerts, motion detection, movement alerts, and many others online using your Telematics Guru account.
Also keeps months of turn-by-turn history.
The battery powered Assett Trackers can go 10-years on internal batteries but if you're live tracking or turn-by-turn they'll only last a few days or a week or two.
Good for shipping containers, not the best option for vehicles.
The Digital Matter units record the address of every ignition ON/OFF event and notes every stop, traffic lights etc.
Speeds and times all logged as well.
It has an inbuit gyro sensor so it detects movement and wakes up from low power mode.
The gyro also detects corners and changes in direction so you end up with very accurate tracking.
If the vehicle travels away from signal coverage it stores data for weeks in its onboard memory until signal is restored, then uploads all of its history to Telematics Guru.
