I've never bothered with these, never even bothered looking at ID tags until recently!

So just wondering, does anyone know why GMH changed the engine option codes for the 3.3HC engine to L14 and the 4.2L to L36. Yet left the 2.85L engine as LD1, the 3.3LC as L23 and the 5.0L as L31 as per all the other vehicles using red engines at the time? Simply does not make sense.

I doubt that there is any genuine 'reason'. Can you explain the logic of calling the TH400 & TH350 both opt M41 in VB/HZ, yet the THH350 became M38 for VC/WB.

Dr Terry
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

I think that is more logical though than the engine code change at the start of the new Series for only some engines. There has to be a legitimate reason it was done, for example it was possibly because XT5 engines were meant to debut with VB - the V8 blocks with the longer valley head bolt bosses certainly did. If that is the case then I guess the question is better phrased as to why the XT5 (blue) 2.85 kept the LD1 code whereas the 3.3 changed from L20 to L14? Same with the 3.3LC XT5 (export) retained L23. Both were as different to the XT4 engines as the L14 was.

What is odd though with the TH400 to TH350 change, M38 already existed in the system as did the crossmembers to suit. M38 was part of HQ and HJ and HZ as it was the auto fitted behind LD4 (250) and LD9 (250HO) engines for South African assembly.

Why did they change trim codes from V to C in HZ and then back to V in WB?

That sort of stuff always happened when a new Holden or new Torana series arrived the other would change paint and/or trim codes. HK changed with HB Torana. LC changed with HG. LH changed with HJ, HJ changed with LX etc. it was so there wasn’t too many colours and trims for the BAP and VAP’s to deal with.

I understand the code change in HZ to come into line with Commodore, but there was no change from HJ -HX or initially HX -HZ. So why change from HZ -WB when there was no change to either material or trim style?

There was no change in trim from HJ to HX as it already changed in HJ to align with LX. HZ changed from HX. HZ had to go to C codes with VB materials as A and B were already used. WB just reverted back to the base codes as it was a new Series.

my recollection was they did .. with a different car line as in Holden large car v V Car (VB Commodore)

the GM production/manufacturing data I have shows.. from the original VB red motors (basically the same as HZ/UC apart from sumps and exhausts) thru to VK
the basic production engine option codes were the same even with XT5 blue motors (later painted black) were manufactured. Pictured is V car info
