VR Ute's brochure says it's first Australia's commercial vehicle with an airbag. It is correct? Unfortunately, there are no details. I'm assuming the airbag was an option only for Ute S. But maybe for base too.

Yes, I do believe that the VR Ute was the first Australian commercial with an airbag. The VS was likewise the first Aussie commercial to offer an airbag for both driver & passenger.

You are correct about the availability, brochure details are very sketchy, with lines like "the airbag is an option on certain models". My thoughts are that it was an option on both the base (A9K) Ute & the S Ute, but not with a column shift auto, because of the complexities involving the combination of the airbag clock spring & the shifter.

Thanks. For some reason there are no factory options in the brochure, only dealer options. It is clear that the airbag was from factory and therefore is not on the equipment list.

Yes the brochure is very odd in that regard.

There is no "equipment" list as such, but has a "features" list & it says at the bottom of the page to "see your Holden Dealer about Air Conditioning, 5 Litre 165 kW V8 Engine, 4-speed Automatic, LSD, Alloy Wheels, Metallic Paint, Auto Column shift, Seat Trim Style, Bench / Bucket Seating, SRS (Airbag), Rubber Flooring etc. etc" All of these are quite clearly factory options.

Dr Terry

The brochure also states that 5.0 185kW (XX1, probably) is available. Perhaps a mistake? I thought the XX1 was offered only for VR Commodore/Calais sedans with IRS.

I know of 2 VR wagons with the 185 kW motor, so that might not be the case.

Did they ever make any VR utes with SRS? There wouldn't be many if any at all.

VN, VQ, VG and VP were available as HSV enhanced with the (external) mods to make 180kW. By the time VS came around it was called HBD (Holden by design) and you could get the 185kW engine, again it was all external stuff. In VSIII the 195kW engine was available as a HBD option, not sure if this was a different engine like the 195kW was in VT or if it was the same engine with external mods. Not certain if VR was still HSV enhanced or HBD.

Hi,

I know VS utes with column auto did have Driver's side as I company I worked for once had one; but no passenger's airbag.

I would be interested if VR utes (including sedans and wagons) with column shift had airbag option; early VR Column Shift autos used an unusual set-up with the wiper switch on the dash where the speed alert would be located and a black VP Calais steering wheel. This set-up was changed during the VR production with the wiper stalk next the column shift and a VR steering wheel.

Yes the VS ute could be ordered with either RH airbag only or both airbags as an option. There is no stipulation in the brochure such "available on certain models". All VS utes had 4-spoke steering wheels as well, where as stock VR utes had 3-spoke.

This makes sense & supports my theory that the column auto caused issues in early VR utes. I remember the change to the wiper switch mid-VR, obviously this was enable the fitting of airbags to those cars.
