Hi All, I'm looking for info relating to the factory metering rods and jets sizes used in our HK 327 Quadrajets 7027213DZ. What I have is no.43 metering rods and no.71 jets. Is this correct?

Have a look here:

https://www.gmcmi.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Quadrajet-Carb-Primary-Metering-Rods.pdf

GTS327 has two primary metering rods listed: 7031843 and 7034845. The second one is the same as HT-HG GTS350 manual (auto uses 7034844), they are the same carby.

The main jet listed is 7031971. Which I believe are 71's. Same as GTS350.

Just go looking in the USA for stuff on these, the 7027213DZ is just a generic 327 4BBL carby for 1967 and any 1968 non AIR applications. Used on manual 240hp, 250hp and 275hp 327 and 295hp + 300hp 350. The AIR versions are 7037213 and 7028213.

7031843 is a 43 rod and 7031845 is a 45 primary metering rod
and 7031971 is a 71 main jet.

GM via Rochester Products made it easy for us in the early days by having the
carb part (re jets, rods) = the part sizing

Didn't do it with secondary rods but DID release a nice big matrix of secondary metering rods
Most USA rebuilders and decent part suppliers (no, NOT Walmart) have this on their sites...

but GM got a bit off track with the later (and NOT compatible with the first type )rod/jet setup
with carbs with #170 part numbers used on XT5 blue motors for example (on WB and VC on Commodores)

Rule of thumb.. starting point with matching rods with jets is the rod number should be 25-30 numbers LESS than the jet number
43 rod with 71 jet is good start

I've often wondered why most of the Canadian 327's in HK got a different carby to the Chevrolet 327's in the earlier GTS327's. We do know that GMH ordered the carbs for the predicted GTS327 build along with the engines in 1967, and those carbs were the pre AIR spec carbs, which is obvious by the number on it (the same engine in the GMH assembled Pontiac and Chevrolet cars used 7028212 which is 1968 AIR spec, prior to 1968 model year 702xxx carbs were pre AIR and 703xxxx were AIR, but for 1968 model year ALL carbs were AIR so they just kept the 702xxxx numbers). We also know that more GTS327's had to be built due to extra cars being added to the build schedule to make the GTS327 eligible for the ARDC's eligibility rules for Bathurst 1968, these were quickly sold/allocated (off the schedule which was visible to dealers) by dealers leaving GMH short many hundred now non-production 327 4BBL engines, the last of the Chevrolet 327's used in HK were completed at Tonawanda in mid July 1968 which was only two weeks away from the end of 1968 model engines. When GMH got McKinnon Industries to build them a small volume of 4BBL 327 engines (the inference is McKinnon could do this as they weren't a Chevrolet plant, but a private entity capable of doing this), possibly GM or Rochester told GMH that they couldn't built them 1967 spec carbs anymore, so they just built what was going on the GTS350. I'd imagine this was because all GM engines had moved to AIR/pollution spec by this time (autos basically what we got with ADR27, manuals also got the AIR air pump). The carby appears to be all but identical. Only difference appears to be double taper B type primary metering rods, a couple of numbers higher. From memory the double tapers lean them off a bit at partial throttle, so might explain why the rods are a slightly higher number. The single taper are supposed to be better for performance and cruise economy, but I don't know all that much about them.

Ive been looking for a 29283 ZC HT350 4 speed carb for a while but no joy atm, however i do have a 7029283 with no date code qhich i believe is a late HKGTS 327 / ultra early HT350 carb. Would this carb be calibrated the same as the later 350 carbs ? Thanks Verdoro

Identical but wasted on a later GTS350 as it’s the wrong carby. Needs to be on a GTS327 or one of the first handful of GTS350.
