Terry Mc here over in Thailand looking for assistance with Salisbury differential parts.

I have a 1972 Lime green metallic Monaro GTS with a 308 engine, Trimatic gearbox and 7.5", 10 bolt Salisbury LSD.

The diff. centre is in very good condition and it would be a shame and a waste to shelve it but I may have to as it's missing a couple of the internal parts. The preload thrust plates and springs are not there and are proving very difficult to track down. I have come to realise that they are like the proverbial' hens teeth'.

Could anyone here provide input/suggestions as to were I might find these parts. I thought I would try the forum before I head off down the Eaton Trutrac route as i'd much prefer to maintain the originality of the car.

Your thoughts/suggestions would be very gratefully received.

You might be best to email a diff rebuilder in Australia. HQ-WB Salisbury stuff is pretty old now, hasn’t been made since the end of VK Commodore in 1986. They might be able to tell you what they do for rebuilds on A9X Torana or HDT Commodore or Holden VK GroupA.

Do you know the history of the car? I can look it up for you if you get me its details.

Many thanks for taking the time to reply.
I have e-mailed many diff. specialists/rebuilders in Australia but have had little or no response. It looks like the next course of action is to buy an Eaton Detroit Trutrac though I will pursue the Salisbury parts just a little longer as i'm a stubborn bugger and am keen to keep the car as original as possible.
I have a copy of the Norm Darwin book 'Monaro magic' and that's full of useful information.

If you send me its details I'll look up the car for you. You won't find that info in a book! Make sure it's the Platinum Edition of Monaro Magic, not the original.

Bring a 308 auto it will have had a 2.78:1 Salisbury so finding a used LSD centre for it will be a bit easier than if it was a manual. 2.78:1 was replaced by 2.60:1 around 1976 but they share the same hemisphere, so you have a chance of finding one out of a WB Statesman or auto 5.0L VH-VK. 3.08, 3.36, 3.55 and 4.44 used a different hemisphere.

I didn't know you could buy new 2.6/2.78 Trutracs, I thought they were 3.08-4.44. But if you are forced down that path just import some 3.08:1 gears. And a speedo driven gear to suit (Rare Spares sell these).

Yes sir, it's the platinum edition of Monaro Magic.
Many thanks for the info about the gearing of the axle. I currently have the 3.36:1 option. I also have a letter of authenticity from Holden customer assistance that says the car was produced on 7/6/72 and would have originally been sent out with the 3.36:1 Salisbury Lim Slip (GV2 G80) rear axle. As the info you kindly provided is different I find myself a little confused.
Here is the VIN,80837QH730434.

Ah yes, I missed it was a GTS. They were standard with 3.36.

I’ll check it out for you.

H730434 was originally a HQ GTS coupe optioned with L31 (308) and M40 (auto). It also had power steering and LSD. As you have been told it was completed on 7/6/72 and it was indeed a 000 X car (no dealer code and export) so it probably doesn't have the driver side safety compliance plate or chassis number. It most likely has an engine number though but it wasn't recorded in GMH's records as it was an export and there was no mechanism to get the engine number off export cars.

It'd be cool to get its BODY plate info (body number and TRIM line) plus its plant tracking number (number stamped into the firewall under the left side windscreen washer pipe).

there are several diff builders (2 in Melbourne I know of and one in Sydney ) that sell you a brand new LSD centre for the Holden 'large' ring gear diff
... same type, same design as the original with one exception in all cases, they use a 4 pin design (stronger like the later BW diff design)

SMITTY- Many thanks for your suggestion. I have a good friend in Melbourne checking for me.

HK1837- Here are the plate details for you;

MODEL 80837QR
BODY 37797-S
TRIM 1832-16Y
PAINT 567-13127

CHASSIS No.CHQ37786S

FIREWALL 37339S

ENGINE No. 11QT495135

Things I know so far.
I imported the engine which appears to have been rebuilt from a 308 statesman block by HM GEM engines.
Car was first registered here on 20th september 1972 and listed as blue in colour, it was red when I bought it, it's now Lime Green metallic as per the plate.
My registration book starts with the 3rd owner in 1994 and it shows a Nissan 6 cylinder diesel engine already fitted.

It's very possible it's a bit of a mix and match. Here, in this country, anything goes with cars and only the chassis number is regulated.

For your amusement as well. The following are the details of another Monaro GTS we found here and owned by someone I knew.

MODEL 80837QR
BODY 37798-S
TRIM 1842-18Y
PAINT 567-13884

CHASSIS CHQ37746S

FIREWALL 37375S

VIN 80837QH730384

I thought i'd show you this as you may have spotted that the Body No's are consecutive. It too had an imported rebuilt engine as before but I don't have the details for that.

Regarding the Salisbury diff. I've made thrust plates, acquired springs and rebuilt the diff centre with them. I now have 2 driving wheels, result.
In testing it i've determined that I need stronger springs as the LSD breaks at 35 ft/lbs of torque and it should be 50. I think this may lessen as the diff is used and the oil warms.
I could just replace the centre but I have to admit that I find this all very interesting and a bit of a challenge to make it work.

H730384 was also a 308 auto with steer and LSD. It was completed on the same day as yours. You can see by the firewall numbers that your car H730434 and the other car H730384 were completed in the body plant closely (consecutive on the body number but a few digits apart on the tracking number (firewall number). I think how it worked was the one with the lower firewall tracking number exited the body plant first - this will simply be a case of bodies painted in batches, yet they were given consecutive body numbers prior to paint. But the one with the lower PSN and chassis number was completed first (as in exited the assembly plant first) which is H730394. As I stated they were both completed on the same day so would have been in sight of each other the whole process. Potentially the bodies were welded together in adjacent Fischer body jigs.

Cool that they both still exist.

Yes 11QT495135 is from a HQ Statesman or HQ Deville completed around late Match into early April 1974.

A hint .. maybe on your final comment

When I bought my VK (ex Vicpol as it turned out per the broadcast sheet) it was a LV2 304 carby engine
.. stuffed at 190,000kms, a M21 4 speed with only 1st and reverse and a VERY noisy single spinner 'large Salisbury'3.08 ratio

I rebuilt all but re the diff...yeah, similar problem and I wanted a TIGHT LSD as it was to be used on the race track
torque was too low like you... my solution? DOUBLE springs! Prick of a job to assemble the centre I can tell you but
it really worked well. You do have to grind the ends to fit both.

that is until about 3 years later, entering T1 at Phillip Island... I selected 1st not 3rd. Ouch....
Sure increased the heart rate, spun into the sand on the outside with diff locked but not before I took a tooth
off the pinion and cracked the LSD centre housing.

Fix?
Fitted a spool and NEW 3.36 gears ( I got off a guy selling motorsport stuff in Ballaarat Victoria who also sells rebuild kits)

SMITTY-Many thanks for your info, much appreciated. Double springs?? now there's a thought!
Short stop/start road test of the car was good. Things a lot quieter at the back. Previously the left rear wheel was driving and the right just following along. Definitely moving in the right direction.

HK1837-Many thanks for the info. I don't have power steering fitted as yet and I find driving without it is not too bad. Maybe a job at a later date perhaps.
I believe that both the aforementioned cars may have arrived here with vinyl roofs. When each car was purchased, they both had off-white painted roofs with the trim pieces in situ on the rear pillars. We both chose to paint our cars in one colour and not go for the vinyl roofs simply because of the weather here. The heat and humidity takes a heavy toll on many parts.
Also, my car had a 6 light rear bumper but the other had the usual 4. It has since been changed to a 4 light after I was informed that 6 light bumpers didn't really exist. But maybe they did on export cars??
