Hi Guys, First time posting here. I recently took my car to get dyno tunes and they told me it made 185rwkw from my 350 chev engine. Would anyone here be able to assist me in working out how much HP the engine has at the flywheel roughly? Running a new built 2 speed powerglide and not exactly sure what diff ratio if that matters at all. Thanks in advance and sorry im a beginner with all this stuff. Steve

Power at the flywheel is around 20% higher than power at the wheels. Or power is 20% lower by the time it gets to the wheels. Either way works because it isn't an exact figure, it depends on the vehicle setup. Manual gearboxes tend to lose a bit less power but the difference isn't huge. Auto boxes have to slosh all that fluid around and that sucks up a bit more power. So 185kW at the wheels is about 230kW at the flywheel which is a bit over 300hp. Someone might have measured both with a powerglide and be able to give you more accurate figures.

In my experience a typical 300hp carbied V8 manual will read about 200hp when measured on a chassis dyno which is about 2/3. But not 100hp real difference, just a guide. The 300hp I’m talking about is SAE gross, whereas the chassis dyno sees the engine with an exhaust, real world fuel, alternator, water pump etc. From memory a GM 300hp SAE gross engine will be about 240-250hp SAE net at the flywheel.
185kW on a chassis dyno is about 246hp, pretty much a rear wheel net figure depending if the chassis dyno does corrections for air temp etc. So I reckon the above is pretty right, just have to allow for some difference due to the auto. I’d reckon you have around 300hp SAE net at the engine, potentially 350hp in SAE gross terms. Similar to an LT1 350 from 1970. Round figures though, all based upon how accurate the chassis dyno is and how the figure is calculated. |

Thanks guys It has edelbrock high rise manifold and 600cfm carb with extractors and im told a baby cam maybe too. I'm surprised it does not spin the wheels at all though and feels really sluggish when driving. Maybe because the 2 speed powerglide changes from 1st to 2nd almost Instantly when taking off I'm not sure

You might have the wrong converter for the engine, rear axle etc. If the dyno isn't telling fibs, 185kW at the rear wheels is a decent figure. My supercharged Hilux had about that, but it also weighed about 2300kg and had big tyres compared to a HK so its hard to compare.
Do you know the following?:
Pistons (dish, flat, lump). Heads (cast number or cc?). Valve sizes. Cam. Rear axle ratio. Tyre size. |

The combination of a "high rise manifold", too large a cam profile & the wrong converter will not spin tyres at all no matter how much bhp they develop at revs.
