I have a virgin HP block with only 3 1"5/8 core plugs instead of 5 and the HP cast higher at no1 cyl instead of the usual low at no2 cly It has the usual steel crank. It has M prefix on the eng no and R suffix Anyone have ideas?

Sounds like a very early block. Is the stamped engine number low ?
