Hi All,
I am wondering how to fit a Chev 307 Radiator to a 186 engine, running a Powerglide. The car has dealer fitted Repco Cooldrive under dash aircon (works a treat), but things heat up a bit on a hot summer's day and am looking at ways to improve the cooling for the old girl. The engine has a 6 blade fan fitted which was part of the old Repco kit.
I have been told the 6 cylinder cars that came with factory aircon and cars that were ordered with the so called Taxi Pack were set up this way - I don't know if this is correct or not.
I have the 307 auto radiator, shroud and a few other pieces, but I have noticed that the radiator inlet and outlet pipe sizes do not match the standard 186 engine inlet and outlets.
Any advice or know how would be appreciated.
Thanks

You'll have to get the outlet ports changed to 6cyl. I think the top one on a SBC is the same size as the lower one on a 6cyl so you should be able to get that one moved. The other way is to get a HJ to HZ 6cyl HD one and use it. |

Hi HK1837,
Thanks for your advice - so its as simple as changing the inlet and outlet pipes on the radiator I have with the ones from a standard 6 cyl radiator.
Is the HJ-HZ Heavy Duty one the same size as the 307? Am asking as my understanding is that if I remove the spacers on the 6 cyl radiator setup, then the 307 radiator bolts straight in to the 6 cyl car without any modifications to the car body.
Thanks again

HJ-HZ fit, you just have to drill some holes in the front as the mounting holes are different. It otherwise works OK.
Yes a 307/327 one will fit exactly where a 6cyl one was. The only issue will be the V8 shroud probably wont work with a 6cyl but it will be relatively close - I used to use 6cyl HJ-HZ aircon car shrouds on SBC in HQ-HZ. It might be worth playing around with a viscous fan and the 307 shroud and see how it goes. |
