Anyone have any ideas on what causes the emission control light to stay on. Car loses power and runs rough. Has been back to dealer 8 times in the last 14 months and they have replaced spark plugs, coil and light is on again the next day. They don't seem to KNOW how to fix it.

Have they tested the oxygen sensor?

Had the same problem with my 2001 Barina. Just nearly out of warranty last Jan and had been in and out of the dealers 4 times and light still kept coming on. They did the spark plugs, the coil, computer work and like you the light was on the next day.
