Hello All

Could some of you guys help me with this. I bought a very original HQ with a newly recoed 202 in it from a really nice old bloke the other day. The car has travelled about 290,000 Km in total and runs really well.
I suspect the dizzy is original and was just swapped over from the old engine when the reco went in. My question is as a dizzy ages do they suddenly fail or are they likely to just gradually deteriorate?
I'm asking because I live in a remote part of W.A and am not sure whether these things give a warning of trouble or just fail leaving you stranded somwhere.

Thanks for any advice

As time progresses the bushes inside the dizzy may wear if oil isnt added at reg intervals to the felt bush (sometimes called a wick). The bushes maybe become oval over time and will not be round and tight. This will effect timing and point bounce. Have i

Also worth checking if it has a fibre drive gear, these can strip and leave you stranded (like the fibre timing gear). Good insurance is to fit a steel drive gear to the dizzy as fitted to earlier Holdens.

Hi Phil,

If you take the points, condensor and earth wire out and also remove the two screws that hold the plate under the points to the dizzy you will access the internals of the dizzy. Check that the shaft does not have any (or too much) sidewards

I carry a complete spare distributer coil and starter and plugs. If you have an automatic you cannot afford to have a starter motor fail. Buy the late model mini one they are smaller and lighter and work better. Fit new points and condenser do not replace
