Hi All
I took the car for a pretty long run today (about 250 km round trip mostly country driving) and noticed on the way home that when sitting at the lights or even cruising slowly it was starting to overheat (normally sits just under half on the temp guage) but was rising as high as three quarters.
When i got home i had a look and there was hardly any fluid in the radiator.
I refilled it and started it up and left the radiator cap off.
It got up to just under half on the temp guage, usual spot but then started to rise and fall and a bit of water was purged out the overflow hose. Soon after, it started purging pretty bad out the cap till i lost a good two or three litres and decided to turn off the motor.
Any ideas as to the issue?
Thanks in advance.
Mark

combustion gas leaking into the water jackets?
get your local rad man to do a "sniffer" test on it.

Hi guys
If there is no water in the oil and no water being blown out the exhaust, does this man that i am more likely to have a blown gasket than a head?
I hope so.

Hello HJHeaven,
The reply from D A Barnes is the one to try. The symptoms you describe in the original post are perfectly normal for any car left idling with no radiator cap on. When water heats up it expands and has to go somewhere.

If you do a compression test and one cylinder is markedly lower than the others, then cracked head is more likely. If there are a pair of cylinders with lower compression, then head gasket is indicated.

Do you check your radiator level regularly? Was the level good before you went on the drive or have you not looked for the passed 6months...?

Mr Void has a good point. If you are not consuming any coolant, then you probably dont have a cracked head & a gasket blown into the water jacket.
In our workshop, we see this often & rather than guess, we use a chemical tester. It has a dark blue chem |

Dr Terry and Mr Void.
I must admit that i hadnt checked the water since Christmas 2008 and did this time before i went for the long drive.
It needed filling which i did (while it was dead cold) and then took off (after warming but without checking |

Hi Mark,
This a good news story for all. Lucky you didnt do the knee-jerk thing and follow the advice to remove a head. Always good to hear a potential disaster story turn out for the better at little or no cost.
