I just got my new radiator support sandblasted. Whats peoples thoughts on paint versus powdercoating? Is there much of a cost difference? Lastly what would either set me back? the radiator support is back to zinc coating.

Cheers Quent

If its a radiator, chances are you want it black. You can save money by going to a poweder coater and asking for it to be done with their next un of black. A 1 off will be a lot more, so if youve got time, thats what id do.

I have no idea if its suitable though, it might be too thick and reduce flow through the radiator?

i have my bumpers done in what they call chrome powder coating. it looks like the billet look. it was done a few years ago. all the front of my van is stone chipped and its 2 pak and the bumpers are still in good shape. powder coating is maybe half of the cost of 2 pak and what model are you working on and where are you at as i know a powder coater in Sydney whos a car nut and gives good prices for other car nuts.

Powdercoat

I took a heap of brackets, pulleys etc in to just get sandblasted at a powdercoaters. He rang me up a week later and said that everything was sandblasted, but he couldnt remember what colour I said I wanted everything coated.

My reply was that I only wanted it sandblasted. He asked why???

I said I thought I could paint it cheaper.

He said "Mate I can coat all of this stuff for less than you could buy a tin of paint."

He was right. He charged me $40 for pulleys, bumper brackets and a heap of other little bits. And that was sandblasted, primed and powdercoated.

My time alone to clean all this gear up was worth the $40.

Im thinking about getting my inner guards(wheel wells) powder coated too. How well would it hold up to stone chips versus the traditional coating?

When i worked in a bike shop we used to re-do all our frames in powdercoat. My own bmx frame was the test bed. I gave it hell and the powdercoat proved to be a very tough finish againt impact and abbrasion. The only thing it would never experience in my usage was stress due to heat, but as its baked in the first place id say it would work fine in all but the most extreme situations.
