on the front left corner of my bonnet, the clear coating on the paint is peeling. its been like this since i bought it about a year ago. i haven't got a clue how to stop the spread. And i had her under a cover for a few weeks while i was away, came back and it had spread to where the cover was touching the body! the paint is metallic if it makes any difference..does anyone know how to stop it or fix it or how much it will cost to get my bonnet resprayed?

I had this happen on my Model A hot rod....turned out to be theyd painted the car with acrylic then put 2 pak clear over it. It just kept peeling off and nothing I could do about it except strip it.

They tell me that the thinners in the paint gets trapped under the 2 pak clear because they evaporate at differnt rates. The paint thinners lifts the clear as it tries to get out....which can happen for ages after the car is painted.

...the upside is that is what happened to "MY" car....it may not be exactly whats happening to "YOUR" car. Take it to a reputable panel beater and see what they think is the cause.

Strip it to bare metal is the only real way to ensure it is stopped.

There could be a number of reasons.
As gtrpu has said acrylic thinners and 2 pak thinners are different.
You can spray 2 pak clear over acrylic paint but you must give the paint enough time for the thinners to evaporate before the top coat.

If both the paint and clear are 2 pak they may have been different brands of paint. (some brands dont mix well together)
The first coat of clear may not have had enough thinners or the air temp or car where very hot when it was sprayed.
They might have used the wrong thinners.
They might have used the stupid water based paint that came out a while ago.
There are many reasons this could happen.

I agree with gtrpu, take it to a reputable paint shop and get them to find out and repair the problem

As Peter Smol says take it back to metal, that is the only way to stop it.if not you might find a year down the track itll start again an youll have to strip it then anyway.is it just the bonnet as it may have been sprayed separately? if not TROUBLE.but anyway take it to metal mate its piece of mind.
