hi, i am putting the timing case cover off of my VH 253 back on and i think i need to drop the sump because the rubber gasket that goes at the bottom of the timing case cover isnt slipping in. My question is if i drop the sump do i have to replace the sump gasket? (if there is one) Edited by user Friday, 24 July 2009 12:56:38 PM(UTC)

yes, there is a sump gasket and you do not have to change it, but it is alot of mucking around to pull it all apart again if it does not seal.
If it was my motor, i would change it.

Buy a 1-piece genuine Holden one. Heaps easier and better seal. Put the timing case on first and then the sump. Clean all the old sealant out from the slots where the seal goes on the timing case cover and rear main bearing. You might have to drop the engine crossmember down to get the sump out on a Commodore (if possible)?

Yes, you will need to drop the crossmember/K-frame to do a sump gasket properly.
You can rest a short length of RSJ from one strut tower across to the other, then hange the motor on some chains from it, to allow you to drop the K-frame and then the sump.
