I have a stock VH 253 with Trimatic thats started make a jet type noise when accelerating that wasnt there before.

Ive recently checked the trans fluid and engine oil and topped them up but it didnt make any noise before or just after.

Im thinking maybe its the exhaust.

Any suggestions on where to look first.

James

ps. Theres no new vibrations, just the noise.

Blown exhaust gasket somewhere? Could even be around the choke pipe adapter where it bolts to the manifold. Start it cold and move your hand around all exhaust joints and see if you can feel the puff of exhaust - do it quick before it gets too hot!

Could also be a vaccuum leak.

I had a 302 XA wagon that made the same noise as you described. It turned out the muffler had collapsed inside and was blocking the exhaust off.
When you reved it up it just went ssshhhhhhh shhhhhhh.

I think its mainly from the clutch fan, should it work all the time? I havent checked the mufflers yet.

Checked fan this morning and runs at engine speed straight away, but could be exhaust as well because I backed off the throttle when noisy and noise went away.

I had to fix my radiator yesterday because the thermostat switch for the thermo fan decided to break away from the side tank and left a big hole.

Anyway when taking off the clutch fan I found that the bearing inside had lost its seal and a couple of ball bearings and the cage was all twisted and bent.

Once I change the fan hub my noise should go away.

I finally changed the hub and its back to its quiet self.

I also found the spring thats spose to be on the front of the hub under the passenger side headlight, I dropped a screw and had to go searching.
