Hi does anyone know of places in melbourne that specialise in soda blasting? can you recomend anyone?

yes, i will make you one recommendation, and that is DO NOT USE IT!!!

it is rubbish, it leaves a residue behind which requires certain chemicals to remove it, it doesnt remove all the crappy paint/rust/body filler, it is NOT cheap, and we used it twice, and had to get our our original blaster to redo it all over again, and i can post up pictures of both cars to campare, one with soda, one with sand.

in melbourne, there is 2 guys doing it(soda), a father and son team in campbellfield, the other somewhere else and 1 dude in geelong.

in my honest opinion, there is only ONE GUY IN MELBOURNE THAT CAN BLAST, and he is not cheap, but the panels and not harmed in any way, the job is impeccable, he tells you when it is ready and is never unable to do something and doesnt "umm and ahh" and "oh its too hard". he also uses the correct "media" for blasting and is very carefull not to apply to much heat to flat surfaces as not to warp panels.

do yourself a favour, dont use soda..

Wow !!! Thanks for the advice, the main concern was the warping of panels.
Would you know roughly how much he would charge for a shell in&out?
Be great to see the differance in the 2 types (sand & soda)is it too much hassel for you to post the pics? (i dont want to break em)

Yes well i think you both just made my mind up not to bother with the Soda . Think ill stick with sand instead!!! Thanks for the heads up sounds like you may have saved a lot of headaches in the future.
just wondering about the guy you recomend (we wreck 81837) is he in Melbourne if so what suburb?

the top 2 is whats left even with heavy soda, the last 2 pics are what a good blaster will leave the metal like, thats the body eady for some etch so we can then carry out the rest of the repairs

Ha Ha Grue....I spent six months looking into Soda Blasting as I was going to start my own business and after calling/emailing around 50 people and reading as much as I could find on the pros and cons of Soda Blasting I gave it a wide birth.
There is a new plastic media on the market that people are using with good results, but in the end its not so much what media thats being used its the experience of the user...So go to a pro it may cost more but it will be money well spent.

Yeah, good process for the right job, like anything else. I will be trying it out on some stuff that needs supersoft media.

Personally I am not a fan of blasting sheetmetal, I am more in the acid/base crowd. Each method has its drawbacks, its how you deal with them that counts in the end

how much did it cost? i am considering getting my HQ ambo body blasted, i went and seen a sandblaster in ballarat and asked how much and he said $150 a hour, and would take about 2 hours, $150 extra for priming

what made me cringe was he said he no longer does roofs or flat panels cause to many people kept complaining about warped panels

well daveyboy,
he is charging about the right rate, but its his time that id be worrying about, there is no way in the world that you could do a HQ ambo body in 2 hours without going like stink,putting heaps of pressure on the panels,getting them hot and therefore WARPING HE ABSOLUTE S#T out of it...no wonder he stopped doing it...damn, it takes my bloke about 4hrs to just do the underneath of a car, then move it to use different media for the flat panels, then go slow to do them..and also $150.00 extra for primer? jesssssuuuss, be must have a big bucket to dip it in, coz it will take him a good 2 hrs to clean the sand just out of the floor, let alone everywhere else and then but the paint and hit it..i think he should stick to balsting RSJs for building sites

yeah i think ill give him a miss, he was pushing a semis trailer in his booth with a forklift when i went there so i think thats the sort of stuff he does most

Soda Blasting is the biggest **** out, blast with garnet after a good paint stripper washed off with metho and stainless steel wool . The secret is to keep the heat off the panels , when blasting use the skim method and control the metals structure , a bit like spray painting.

DONT APPLY TO MUCH IN ONE AREA...........

This is a really old thread, but relevant.

I am restoring a set of V4 Simmons wheels and the centers need painting. I was going to get them soda blasted (less damage) but now and rethinking this based on the comments above.

Don't really want to damage the soft alloy by using a sand blasting technique - unless there is a special media which you can use to limit damage?

Maybe just paint stripper and a hot gerni spray will get the majority of paint off?

Ive had one guy (highly recommended) claim it will cost me $150 per door, boot and bonnet and then a further $1200 to media blast the stripped shell but only if it turns up at his booth on a rotisserie.

That's $2100.00 before I get the front end, diff and other bits and pieces cleaned up.



Is this a lot of money because I thought it was somewhat expensive?
