Ive just fitted a pair of front Callipers and Stub Axles into my LH Torana to convert to HQ stud pattern, however the brake lines are too short despite installing them in both directions ie Callipers facing the rear and then facing forward but still fall short.

The question is which direction should the back of the callipers be facing and what to do about the Brake line problem?

Also are there L34 type axles available for sale to convert the rear end?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi tyco007.

I can make you street-legal brake hoses in any length with a choice of fittings, in factory type rubber or stainless braided. You havent put your location in your profile but Im in Sydney.

The caliper can sit front or rear, where ever you can get the best caliper clearance on full-lock. Also allow for steering arm clearance.

GMH used HQ calipers and stub axles on L34, calipers were at the front. what they did though was plug the hole where the caliper enters the bottom of the caliper, and drill and tap a new hole in the top so the hose becomes top entry. I have a pair at home and can send youa photo of wherethe hose enters the top.

You wont find L34 axles anymore. I think the norm is to use modified Centura axles, but you must use a fine spline diff.

I dont think that that will work. Centura axles are 25 spline (B-W), whereas Holden Torana fine axles have 23 splines.

I think the easiest fix is to just shorten & re-spline two HQ-WB V8 axles. You must also use HQ-WB rear brakes because the 9" Torana drum wont fit over the HQ flange & the brake assemblies have a different offset anyway.

Bugger. Im sure I was told that was what one L34 owner did. Unless the banjo sun gears were modded to suit?

Dr T, shortening HQ-HZ V8 Salisbury or 6cyl banjo axles doesnt work unless you can redo the heat treatment on the splines once they are cut. I tried that many years ago and it failed pretty quickly (splines too soft). Personally Id have a look at HZ/WB disc brake Salisbury axles and measure the axle flange size versus an LH/LX one and compare. I think they are close in flange diameter and it might give you an idea how much diameter you need in the axle flange to allow a 4.75" PCD. Talk to an axle expert first though before trying anything like this!

A pair of Moser billet axles would have all of the dimensions custom made to what you want, and cost maybe $1000 for the pair.
